Re: Wii stuffed into a Gamecube case conjecture
To beef up the GC, just wait for some people are thinking about adding 16 or 32MB to the system. It may improve homebrew ability, but just forget getting smoother games that were lagging, unless someone would make a remake of them (sometimes games are just plain bloated by bad, non-optimized code)....

Re: Wii stuffed into a Gamecube case conjecture
One thing people might find hilarious that doesn't require destroying stuff is making a bigger-than-normal GameCube shell that would fit the Wii mobo. It'd give you a chance to make it an actual cube, not just an almost cube.

Re: Wii stuffed into a Gamecube case conjecture
I always thought it was silly that the Wii requires a wiimote with batteries/sensor bar just to launch a GameCube game. Not going to take any of my consoles apart though, so I wish you luck. Someone measured the Wii motherboard size here: https://www.reddit.com/r/WiiHacks/comments/6v11x4/motherboard...

Re: That myth that the discs spin backwards...
Yeah, I did that soon after first hearing that myth back in the day. Today I took the disc out soon after boot and the laser is pointed far away from the center. That sounds like a plausible explanation about how some of the confusion started, like if someone said GameCube discs are encoded backwards.

Re: Any games you prefer the d-pad on?
Yeah like Twilight Princess for example uses the pad to call up the map/items, but on the Collection screen it does nothing at all. In Wind Waker it does nothing on the Items/Quest Status screen. I think if more games were programmed to utilize it, even if just another way to navigate menus in addit...

Any games you prefer the d-pad on?
Nobody I know ever talked about using the d-pad much when the GameCube first came out, but I find it takes less finger movement to use than the control stick, so I'm using it more often now.
What about the rest of you? Any games where you prefer to use the d-pad to the control stick?

I'm finding more places that say 485 but I think we have bigger fish to fry than chasing down all the authors.

That myth that the discs spin backwards...
Anyone know the origin story of this myth? Was it a planned but scrapped idea from Nintendo?

Re: Was the Gekko influenced by the Intel 486?
I'd have to agree - also at the bottom of page 1-15 of the Gekko User's Manual (under 1.2.9 Clocking): The feedback in the PLL guarantees that the processor clock is phase locked to the bus clock, regardless of process variations, temperature changes, or parasitic capacitances. That's good enough fo...

Re: Was the Gekko influenced by the Intel 486?
One official source that says 485 Mhz:
https://www.nintendo.com/en-gb/Hardware ... 27134.html
That could matter for TAS verification/accurate emulation - dunno if anyone has ever measured it to more significant digits.

Re: Was the Gekko influenced by the Intel 486?
You mean the extra speed of 648 MHz wasn't worth the power/cooling requirements? I guess. The GameCube isn't a silent console.

Was the Gekko influenced by the Intel 486?
I wonder if the designers of the Gekko were fans of the Intel 486, because the Gekko is clocked at 486 MHz... Maybe they were being sneaky trying to hide the fact that they were being influenced by x86 at the time, because they were working on extending a PowerPC processor, so they hide this little ...

Here is a place where they are called triggers - in Table 2-2 Controller Buttons on page 8 of the Revolution SDK Nintendo GameCube Controller Library:
Code: Select all
PAD_TRIGGER_Z
PAD_TRIGGER_R
PAD_TRIGGER_L

Ah yeah, when you hold R or L down all the way there's eventually a little "click." That makes sense.

Why does Nintendo use the term "Button" for the controller's R and L?
This one's a mystery to me. Surely "trigger" or "shoulder" would have been better? Maybe it's a translation issue?
