Help modding my cube

I am a n00b looking for guidance.

I want to use my GameCube to primarily NES and SNES games. I'd prefer to boot from an SD card and store all my emulators and games from the SD card as well.

Is the WiiKey Fusion my best bet at this point? I'd need to get someone to install it for me but it seems like that would be straightforward thanks to the guides the folks here have put together. Or should I settle for the SD media loader and just accept booting from disc?

If you just want emulators, SD Media Launcher is great i think. You don't need to burn discs, you can load things from SD. The only problem is that the SD Media Launcher disc doesn't recognize SDHC or SDXC cards (but you can still boot Swiss from a regular SD then swap for a SDHC/SDXC which are recognized by Swiss).

Thanks!

If I did want to go all the way and boot from a SDHC card, what's the the right chip to get (if any are still available) to install?

There are cards larger than 2GB that work with the Datel product. Just make sure the card is non SDHC format.

I have used a Platinum 4GB card without a problem.

I personally wouldn't bother trying to hunt down the non-SDHC 4GB card. They're more trouble than what they're worth. 2GB is enough for emulators/homebrew, if you want Swiss and backups from SD card then you could simply swap.

You might want to check this page out: http://www.gc-forever.com/wiki/index.ph ... g_Homebrew or this page too http://www.gc-forever.com/wiki/index.ph ... ng_Backups

I'd personally recommend if you want a no modchip solution, you go with SD Media Launcher or if you don't mind a modchip + dvd-r to get your homebrew booting, go with Xeno GC.

Thanks emu_kidid. I had no idea you could have SD Media Launcher auto execute a DOL.

I want to run Swiss and now I can get right into it without having to navigate around. This is going to be fun.

With a XenoGC you could burn Swiss to the DVD and it'll "autoboot" too..

Is it possible to have two SDGecko's attached to a system at once? So I could have the one SD that autoboots to Swiss and has my emulator stuff and then the second SDHC card with backups, etc.?

Good god this is going to be cool. Is there a max size SHDC card that Swiss can address?

you can use an SDXC 64GB (possibly even a 128GB) card formatted to fat32

What speed SD card should I get for playing backups? Class 10?

Doesn't matter since GC can't read so fast

True, but if you want fast transfers from the PC to the SD you should think about getting a class 10.

Class 2 vs Class 6 does seem to make a tiny difference in Swiss, but nothing major..

I am having a lot of trouble with SD Media Launcher and would appreciate any help I can get.

When SD Media Launcher starts up, it recognizes the SD card and displays the card's file system but every two seconds it flashes the insert SD card dialog which immediately disappears. When I hit a button on a folder, I get a red exception screen. When I try to launch Swiss or emulators, I just get a black screen. The reset button doesn't even work once I've gotten hung on the black screen.

I'm guessing SDML came with a faulty SD Gecko. Any other ideas or things to try? I'm pretty confident the SD card is good as it seems to work fine with my computer.

you could try the tape mod to see if it helps...

add tape to the inner bottom of the case to make the board sit tighter and make better contact...

If your talking about the official Datel reader then thats your problem - it drops out when reading data.

EVERYONE ;) who owns this reader has problems I suspect.

Get another cheap reader.
Just today 42 readers bulk went for £10 @ebay. I should have bid and given the things away.
