Resident Evil crashing when videos are played. (SOLVED)

Post by piratesephiroth » Thu Jul 04, 2013 7:49 am

[*]Running Swiss from Qoob Pro. Resident Evil USA ISO from SD Card.
[*]Running Swiss from SD card has the same results.
[*]Tried with all Swiss 0.3 revisions, from r174 to the latest r221, same results.
[*]Tried with other SD Cards with the same results.
[*]Tried with all possible settings, with and without a DVD in the drive.
[*]ISO images are good, matching the ones in Redump.org.

Console info:
Model: DOL-001
IPL: NTSC Revision 1.1
DVD: 06 2001/08 (61)

For some reason only the first short intro video plays fine.
Game crashes whenever a video starts after that (gets stuck on a black screen).
Very rarely a video plays, but then crashes at the end.

The game runs perfectly fine on SD-Boot RC4.

Any ideas of what could be causing that?

All right. After browsing the forum for a while, I found megalomaniac's tape trick.
I also noticed I have that very same SD Gecko...

I put the tape on mine too (had to file the sd gecko case a bit, otherwise it wouldn't close properly) and BANG! no more crashes during videos/cutscenes!

Maybe this should be added to the TipsTricksSwiss page?

the tape is used to raise the PCB to allow proper contact with the memcard slot pins

The design is flawed and the board doesn't make too much pressure on the connector's pins. You can even notice it doesn't fit as tight as the memory card in the memory card slot.
If you put the sd gecko and a memory card side by side on a flat surface and look at both connectors you'll see there's a difference of around half a milimeter in height.

agree, the design is flawed...4 layers of the blue painters tape i use is equal to about .5mm which creates a perfect fit.

if you have more than one sd gecko, make sure to tape mod both...
trust me, it really sucks when you grab a non-tape mod gecko and have to troubleshoot hardware and software for 4 hours only to realize the gecko adapter has no tape...

I didn't realize sd gecko pcbs are lower, that's a dumb design.
