16MB Wii Memory Card
So I got another second hand NGC yesterday, it came with a 16MB memory card with a Wii logo on it, I tried it in NGC and it works as a 251 block memory card, are Wii & NGC memory cards the same?, I thought the Wii only had the memory card slots for backwards compatibilty with NGC cards and uses SD cards instead, I don't have a Wii and therefore have no knowledge of such things. How many blocks equate to 1MB? I'm guessing it's been labeled MB as Mbit and not Megabyte.
Re: 16MB Wii Memory Card
Memcard 59 are 512KB in size. That is, 8KB blocks, with 5 reserved for the file allocation table.
Your card labelled 16MB is 16MBit, meaning 2048KB, which is then 2048KB / 8KB == 256 Blocks (or 251, because of the 5 reserved)
There is no difference with "Wii Memory cards", they are exactly the same as GC memory cards and are only named like that to fool people into thinking that they need them (in the early days).

Re: 16MB Wii Memory Card
Thanks! are the unofficial bigger ones reliable or are there any incompatibilities with various games? the biggest i've seen is 512MB, I also wondering if the was any adaptor where you can change a sd card into a working memory, I saw a EMS smartmedia one for a ps2 memory card a while back.
Re: 16MB Wii Memory Card
I would personally stay away from third party memory cards altogether, as they are generally of poor quality and very prone to data loss/corruption. There probably are exceptions to this, but I just wouldn't bother. The biggest official GameCube memory card had 1019 blocks (8MB or 64MBit), and even that one apparently had issues with some games. Assuming that by 512MB they mean 512MBit (64MB), that memory card should have 8187 blocks.
There exist SD card adapters that plug into the memory card slot, but they don't behave as a regular memory card at all.

Unofficial are fine, I've been using one for 4 years now without issues. The dirty/crap ones are the ones that use compression, though i'm yet to come across one myself.kevstah2004 wrote:Thanks! are the unofficial bigger ones reliable or are there any incompatibilities with various games? the biggest i've seen is 512MB, I also wondering if the was any adaptor where you can change a sd card into a working memory, I saw a EMS smartmedia one for a ps2 memory card a while back.
Re: 16MB Wii Memory Card
i've had troubles with one third party mem card that had 1019 blocks.
someone already mentioned even the official 1019 nintendo memory card has its issues. some games work ok, other will corrupt the save and ask you to format the memory card next time you load. i found that resident evil games are most prone to corruption.
i'd say most 3rd party 59 and 256 cards will do the job just as well as nintendo ones but i'd stay clear of 1019

Re: 16MB Wii Memory Card
What the..? A DS game alone usually requires 512KB for its save. I have such a Memcard but it's hard to believe that it has only a space of 0.512 MB By modifying a Memcard, it can be used as a SD Card, which means even SD Cards with 512KB are possible. I think this makes perfectly clear, that Memcards are overpriced, especially the original ones from Nintendoemu_kidid wrote:Memcard 59 are 512KB in size.
Re: 16MB Wii Memory Card
I use a MemCard with ~1000 Blocks and I have no problems at all... It's not a official one.
Re: 16MB Wii Memory Card
andzlay, likewise, no issues on my unofficial 1019 card

Re: 16MB Wii Memory Card
After reading that Sintendo it seems that most of problems relate to cards not being formatted before playing a game, I've never had to format a card but then again all my cards where second hand.
Out of curosity is it possible to unformat them with software like MC Annihilator to there unused state?
