A lot of Gamecube modding questions

Post by Blake5100 » Thu Apr 21, 2016 4:59 pm

Hello! I've been looking to get into the gamecube modding scene for a few days now. I can already load swiss through the Home Bros exploit, however I've been looking for ways to load backups. I know you can use mini dvd-r's but I heard they kill the laser. Is that true? If that's true, I looked towards the direction of SD gecko. I looked all around on sites like ebay and amazon but the only one that wasn't a "no name" brand I could find was this: http://www.amazon.com/SD-Card-Adapter-W ... W3R8E7MD4H It looks like it's a wiikey sd gecko judging from the logo at the bottom. The only thing that scares me is that they all ship from china. I'm guessing it's probably a knockoff? I noticed somebody else on here had the same problem and wondered where they could buy an sd gecko. He was suggested "www.badassconsoles.com". When I went on the site, there wasn't one sd gecko on the site. So where exactly do I go about buying these things!? Thanks for reading this gigantic wall of text! :P

Well a new laser costs less than 10 EUR. But I never heard that dvd-r are killing the lasers. You can adjust the laser so it can read dvd-r better.
You would probably not get an original SD gecko from Nintendo, since those were only included in a Japanese game (animal crossing?). Just get those Chinese clones. The one you linked is also a clone. I just ordered two cheap clones for about the half of the price of your Amazon offer.
Sometimes if the connection of the adapter is bad, you need to open those adapters and put a bit of paper or anything under the pcb, to push the board a bit to make the connection steady.

Thanks alot! One last question though. After reading this about how to make an sd gecko from the link you showed me; http://www.gc-forever.com/wiki/index.php?title=SDGecko I was wondering if instead of using an sd port, could I put a USB port in there instead? And would you mind sharing with me where you got your sd gecko from?

No, an USB port is not easy doable. It's possible to put a drive replacement into your gamecube, but that requires some more work (including soldering) than just a plug'n'play adapter and a software exploit.

I got my SD geckos from http://www.focalprice.com/GW0083S/SD_Ca ... _Gray.html
Lol I just realized, that those are the same as the one you found on amazon
But hey on focalprice it's only 3.89 USD
Anyway I can't tell you if they're good or not, because I haven't received them yet. atm I have a "wiikey sd adapter" which looks cheap, but works fine.
