Well a new laser costs less than 10 EUR. But I never heard that dvd-r are killing the lasers. You can adjust the laser so it can read dvd-r better.
You would probably not get an original SD gecko from Nintendo, since those were only included in a Japanese game (animal crossing?). Just get those Chinese clones. The one you linked is also a clone. I just ordered two cheap clones for about the half of the price of your Amazon offer.
Sometimes if the connection of the adapter is bad, you need to open those adapters and put a bit of paper or anything under the pcb, to push the board a bit to make the connection steady.

No, an USB port is not easy doable. It's possible to put a drive replacement into your gamecube, but that requires some more work (including soldering) than just a plug'n'play adapter and a software exploit.

I got my SD geckos from http://www.focalprice.com/GW0083S/SD_Ca ... _Gray.html
Lol I just realized, that those are the same as the one you found on amazon
But hey on focalprice it's only 3.89 USD
Anyway I can't tell you if they're good or not, because I haven't received them yet. atm I have a "wiikey sd adapter" which looks cheap, but works fine.
