Gamecube backups eventually error

A number of the games I've burnt to backup media (verified ISOs and Ritek G04s) boot but eventually fail with 'An error has occured' or some variation of that. Backups were burnt at 3x with a TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-L632H AS03 external DVD burner.
Does anyone know how I can rectify this?

3x??? What's your potentiometer set to and have you cleaned your lens?

Yes, the external drive I bought only burns at 3.3x. Lens pot is at 200ohms and lens has been very recently cleaned.

200 is too high. Burns are best at x2
