Question: dead laser = disc motor wont start?

Hello, i have several gamecubes that have an issue where the disc drive just wont spin up the disc, is this related to a dead laser? i saw a comment somewhere saying if it doesnt detect a disc it wont spin? the laser moves back and forth when i press the closed lid button..
any help would be appreciated.

Yes that's correct, if it doesn't think there's a disc, it won't even try to start the spindle motor. That short back and forth motion happens before spin-up. Doesn't exclude the possibility of a dead spindle though.

is there any easy way to confirm of the motor is broken?

You would have to take the entire drive apart and test the motor directly.

the next idea i had, was the megadrive v5, not sure if there are any available for sale ATM..
