Computer virus that disables almost everything

Post by mikog » Fri Oct 28, 2011 12:40 am

I have this virus that disables alot of stuff (System restore,Cmd, etc.) on my computer.
It's a HP windows XP desktop.
The virus keeps making a pop-up message that says: "your hard drive is corrupted and needs a scan". then I can only choose "scan and fix" (or) "cancel and reboot".

Can't reset the computer back to factory settings, too many important files. also It didn't come with a windows xp disc and how did you know I downloaded something to cause this? because I didn't, I just went on 2 websites.(metroid construction forums and zophar's domain to be exact.) I had mc-afee internet security, but it expired long before this happened.(and it was for 2 years..... I bought it in 2010, it wasn't supposed to expire yet.)

Backup your files to another hard disk. Buy Windows or a new PC. Get some good FREE anti-virus like AVG or Avast. Problem solved.

Now it I'm realizing I can't access all files/folders because it says they are "hidden", not letting me disable it's "hidden" state. Also there's a auto-matic virus scan (that really is the virus itself). Since I don't have task manager, I can't stop it. (without turning it off)

Like emu_kidid said, back up your files and reinstall windows.

I usually use an ubuntu live cd to backup files, especially if the virus is nasty and doesn't let you run explorer.
Once you have linux running, mount the windows partition and copy the folders you wish to keep to a network location or an external hard disk

ubuntu? I googled it... it's free, I have internet access on it, it's just slow.
:( I've decided to just....re-install windows.(since it really isn't my computer, I told the person whose computer it really is and they won't try these steps because they think they  will get more viruses.) (I just share with this person, :? it's not really mine.) Emu_kidid, You may just lock this.

Download malwarebytes anti-malware software, its free and its awesome for resolving stuff like this. That and install AVG free. Do a thorough scan with each. Do it in safe mode if you have to (keep hitting F8 at boot).

Well it's too late, but now... after I re-installed windows (system restore F10 at boot screen.) I got an error message (I clicked ok on it) and it's MICROSOFT WINDOWS XP screen frozen saying: please wait...

it's Windows ;)

seriously, you might want to look into ubuntu. just burn it and boot from that cd. you get a live system and can get used to it first.

Seriously, if its not a "gaming pc" then linux is the way to go. Ubuntu is super user friendly.

Yeah! Download Ubuntu 10.10 and install it to another partition. Then while you are in Ubuntu install Clamav. Clamav is a virus scanner for linux and windows. Scan your windows partition and you should be good to go.

One more vote for Ubuntu!! ;)

I already did windows re-install (F10), now I can't access the pc at all... so I'm going to buy a windows 7 disc.

It didn't "fully install", the virus deleted a file in the recovery partition.

recovery != re-install

you really have to make a clean install, not a recovery!

When you get to the part that you have to choose where you want your windows install, delete/drop all the partitions and remake a partition.
That should do it in most cases, if that doesn't work the virus probably broke your HDD, or other hardware.
In anyway good luck ;)

I press F10 when it comes on and it doesn't ask me  "where to install this partition".(this pc was bought in '05, so maybe it doesn't have that feature??)

try using gparted live CD and wipe the drive as a new NTSC partition...
then use windows/kubuntu CD to install new OS

I was talking about the windows xp install disc.

Press D when you see that screen to delete the partition (deletes EVERYTHING), and after that's done press to create a new partition.

I hope I'm more clear now ;)
