Tested so far (based on tests done by me):

Brand: Seagate
Capacity: 500GB
Speed: 5400rpm
Type: 2.5" SATA HDD
Comments: Slow

Brand: Western Digital
Capacity: 320GB
Speed: 7200rpm
Type: 3.5" IDE HDD
Comments: Fast

Brand: Seagate
Capacity: 40GB
Speed: 7200rpm
Type: 3.5" IDE HDD
Comments: Fast

Brand: Seagate
Capacity: 10.2GB
Speed: 7200rpm
Type: 3.5" IDE HDD
Comments: Fast

Brand: Seagate
Capacity: 60GB
Speed: 5400rpm
Type: 2.5" SATA HDD
Comments: Slow

A general note about 2.5" and SATA->IDE adapters is that 2.5" will most likely be 5400RPM which will be slower, and if you couple that with the SATA to IDE adapter possibly having some overhead, these can make for slow HDD's. I recommend 3.5" 7200RPM IDE HDD's or SATA if you can't find IDE anymore.

yes, but a 7200 through a decent adapter is not noticeable I've been told.

i bet they're slow, too....should be a bit faster than 5.4k RPM SATA though, since it's not going through an adapter...

Yeah, I can confirm the slow down is my cheap SATA->IDE adapter, 5400rpm IDE is pretty decent.

I was wondering how could only the discs' RPMs be the cause of the slowness in loading, since usually loading from HDDs is faster than using an optical media.

just how slow are 5400 RPM vs 7200 RPM ?

can you give us an exemple with a game ?

other tests that can be done are with a 10 000 RPM HDD or flash drive ...

also, which filesystem is used ? fat, fat32, ntfs, ext, other ?

FAT32 for now. the comparison between a 5400rpm sata (through a sata->ide adapter) compared to an ide 7200pm (direct connection, no adapter) is quite noticeable. I.e. you'd think the game is frozen if you didn't know any better than to keep waiting where as it'd be almost instantaneous on the 7200 ide.

I have a 200 GB 3.5" IDE from Western Digital. (WD2000) I'm pretty sure it's only 5400 rpm. Do you think it will be fast or slow?
How's the performance compared to sd-cards? For example in F-Zero GX there's always choppiness in the cinematic before the stage begins. Can I expect them to go away or not?

Burbruee, I suspect it's still there, though I haven't tried. If I manage to get it working without a disc in the drive it should be a tiny bit faster but that's a long shot.

I had a Samsung Spinpoint P80 laying around here: It is fast, quiet and working with swiss!

Specs[1]: IDE, 80gb, 7200 rpm, made in 2004
Works well with all 7 games, i have tested so far.

Has anyone tried a SSD with this? I had a thought about using one in a gc case mod, since it's smaller than a 3.5" HDD but should give good performance like a 7200rpm HDD.

I've tested:

Samsung SpinPoint 120 GB (not sure if 5400/7200rpm): Not working. (able to read, but not boot. First I made folders for each game and when entering a dir it showed up corrupted symbol names like ÿÿÿÿbbbbbüü, harddrive is healthy)
Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 200 GB. This one didn't work either, but I suspected that and I don't think it's healthy. Makes weird noises. It was able to boot games, but they all stopped on the title or splash screen, started loading for 5-10min+ and making clicking sounds.
Western Digital 5400rpm (I think? Not sure, but I know it's ATA100 not ATA133) 200 GB Works perfectly.

As [1] says it uses ultra-ata/66, I would assume 28-bit LBA.

Odd my 4.32GB Fujitsu MPC3043AT 5400-RPM made 1999 works fine ATA-33

Possibly try cb and ms, What cable you using with it 40 or 80? not that I think it makes a difference but i'm yet to try it with a 80.
