Hi! The ide-exi adapter seems to be a great piece of hardware. But how is this extarnal powercable called? And where can I get one? I'm living in Europe.

the connector you are looking for is called Molex or 4-pin Molex

Yep! I know how the connector is called. But normally you'll get a molex female to molex male or a Y cable or so. And I was not able to find a powersource for it. I don't want to use a PC Power Supply Unit

Try ebay, I've seen a few on there for less than €10. Just search "molex power supply".

my friend is using a molex power supply at the moment. and there the picture is snowy, btw, he is using a quality psu from a named company not such a cheap ebay product.

the problem with ATX PC power supplies is, that they're switched by the PC/mainboard and some, if not all won't work, because there's no mainboard that tells them to start...

you only need to bridge pin 15 and pin 14 on the atx connector then the power supply starts without a mainboard

the pin is called PS_ON (power supply on)

I ordered my ide-exi from the european store, hope I get it soon
I plan to use this to power my hd:

It's quite cheap and I have used it already a lot and managed to power all my hd:s + you get ide/sata usb adapter as well.

Yes, should work as expected.
I have a similar device, it is great to connect old harddrives laying around.
And you can connect the hdd of your ide-exi easily to your pc with it, of course.

I recently purchased this:
12V DC 4-Pin Molex External Power Supply Adapter

I want to warn you that the one i recieved worked for 5minutes and then something inside went bang.
The device had severely overheated and I am assuming that a component reaching cooking point was the bang i heard.
It may be that I was unlucky, and these items are normally fine?
I thought its best to mention it anyway as I for one will avoid this specific adapter in the future.

I use an old ide hdd case usb, which the usb part doesn't work anymore.

Having had the power supply blow up on me, I decided that I would do away with the old PC PSU (too big and noisy fan!)
I made a power supply mod for the Molex HDD supply
I took 12v from the power cable
I took 5v from the memorycard EXI pin6
and added a switch to power off HDD
Its working very well and not having cloudy problems

Hey guys,
inspired by Jaecus i also build a power source for the hardisk.
I think its the best solution and its very easy to make.
I soldered it directly to the power board.

Thats cool, My way is completely seperate from the gamecube console itself, and therefore easier to transfer to another console. However, I like this method and looks preferable for those who have purchased an IDE-EXI.

I use one of these adapters firts time plugged into a power strip, it got overheating and broke, I claimed in the store and gave me another one, these time I always use it plugged into a uninterruptible power supply and no problems
