Thoughts on E3 and all the new stuff

Post by emu_kidid » Wed Jun 08, 2011 3:11 am

My thoughts after watching E3 is that the new WiiU will be a lot of fun and of course is innovative right off the bat again in typical Nintendo style ;)

The Zelda stuff was pure gold, I'm also looking forward to practically everything first party shown by Nintendo.

In all seriousness, the WiiU looks pretty decently spec'd, with a PowerPC 3-core CPU and 1080p capability, if homebrew becomes possible, I'll be having a lot of fun developing for that platform :D

I must admit I didn't bother watching the Microsoft segment since all I mainly gathered from people was "more Halo and more Kinect crap"... Sony's segment was ok, the 3D stuff is interesting, but again, they're just following behind Nintendo's footsteps with the motion stuff and the 3D (3D coming from the mainstream stuff and not from 3DS).

Looks pretty sick if you ask me. Like all fanboys, I squee'd a bit at the zelda demo. Controller looks interesting. Lets hope its comfy to hold though.

Still haven't gotten any confirmation on a graphics chip, yet.
Pretty beefy specs on the proc for sure.

Cumbersome controller, isn't about time we had gloves with sensors that have hydraulic ribbing that harded or loosen your hand + fingers to simulate holding something along with exoskeleton body suits  they could learn alot from the porn industry imo.

i voted for Nintendo since its the only one i saw......
anyway. so basically the wii gets all polished up and gets a new controller. i must admit i'm not a fan of the wii so i'm not all that excited about the WiiU as everybody else seems to be. still, the hardware specs sound kinda good. looking forward to that....but i doubt they will use the Power7, they will have something made especially for the WiiU,like before.

The console sounds like fun! The first game they show in this video looks great! The other one is not that good I think
Backward compatibility is also a good point. I wonder if it's possible to still play GCN games, but I guess not (native? ).
But the controllers will be quite expensive with screen and all the stuff... But then 3rd party controllers could be awesome (bigger screens).

The controllers are not expensive, in fact you can't even buy them... There's only 1 controller (with screen) per console, and it already comes with the console, it's not sold separately.

The source for the idea that you can't buy a WiiU controller separately is iffy.
Look at the facts:

This "confirmation" came from a rep at E3.
What would an E3 rep really know about the hardware/software plans for the WiiU? Even Myamoto was told not to get into specifics.

The wording is ambiguous.
It could either mean that the controller can't be used without the console. (You can't buy just the controller...and still play games.)
Or, it could mean as stated in the article.

Now, these aren't exactly definitive points on the WiiU controller debate, but we should wait until some official confirmation from Nintendo.

i am curious as to how they handle multiple screen. obviously, output from the console can be redirected to the controller. that's cool. and you can have something different on the controller and on the output (TV). that's cool too... the trick is, can it really handle, say, 4 or 5 screens?

I can think of quite a few games that could be "multiplayer" games with some sort of stats on the main (big) screen, and each player with their own views on the controller itself. Playing assisted D&D would be sweet too... the GM has the controller with "Secret" info, and can pass it to give some info to one or the other player, or share with the group on the big screen.

I'm very curious as to what N is going to be doing with all that stuff... i'll be in line to get one on launch...

yeah, I too think it might be one LCD controller per WiiU. I don't know, but it might be a lot of bandwidth to have multiple streaming at the same time let alone how much can the console handle rendering 4x the amount to send out...

From what I heard the WiiU controller screen isn't multi-touch and uses the same tech as the DS touch screen and although that's not a bad thing it does feel like they cheaped out to save costs, the same type screen as the ipod would have been perfect.

Emukidid, where did you hear about the CPU?
There was a feature list showing the specs of the new Wii doing the rounds which ended up being fake.
I don't think the true spec have been revealed yet.

Overall I was a bit disappointed with all the platforms this E3, I expected more, I mean even if the WiiU has slightly better horsepower and graphics than the 360/PS3, when Microsoft and Sony release their new consoles it's just going to put the WiiU back at the bottom again.

Although, I do like the Homebrew possibilities with the new controller. (what's the bets that Nintendo put DS games in the new Virtual Console)

Plus Nintendo has dug there own graves by having Wii games backward compatible, maybe that will end up being the way in. :)

Ploggy, I'm just going based on this stuff: http://e3.nintendo.com/hw/#/about but I assume (and hope) it'd be decently clocked.

I'm not so sure about that... Anyway, I don't really care, as long as there are good games I will buy any console available (whether it is Nintendo, M$ or Sony)

Why? They did a decent job to secure the DSi and 3DS. I think Nintendo has learned a lesson from the Wii.

The good side of E3:

Kirby Wii: It looks like the developers put some effort into capturing the original Kirby essence and, as a result, it plays pretty much exactly as the NES,SNES ACTUAL KIRBY GAMES (No Kirby: Mass Attack or Canvas Curse or Epic Yarn, NO JUST KIRBY WII). The music looks pretty sweet too, which I can’t say about most of Nintendo’s latest games. It has multiplayer mode with up to 4 players , with Jump-in and play feature and just like NSMBW it allows player to attack (suck each other in this case) and have a blast. Conclusion, it looks pretty fun and.. it’s the only game I'm 100% sure I'm getting from this E3.

Rayman Origins: Holy shit, this is fucking awesome. Day one on both.

Mario Party 9: Looks 3 times better than the shit named Mario Party 8.

Yeah Mario Party 8 is crap. Forced 4:3 screen, lame games. I hate the over-use of the motion-move-point-stuff. The worst Mario Party game ever, I hope.

for those interested, i snap'ed that picture today:

http://korigan.net/wiiu_photo.jpg

that should give you an idea of the size... sadly, the lines where somewhere around 4 to 6 hours to get to see it, and i wasn't willing to wait that long to get my hands on it for 2 minutes... too many things at E3 this year that needed my attention... =;>

i wish i had a chance to actually hold it (to figure out the weight), and play it (to see how fast it's playing when playing locally on the screen...)

either way, i'm fairly certiain i'll be saving my money for when this sucker gets released. it was impressive to see it actually in use at the show. makes me wonder how much longer it'll be before they release it... they said 2012... but are we talking spring (like the 3DS this year) or much later, after summer next year (a year+ from now...)
i really hope it'll be sooner rather than later... but i just don't know at this point...

8GB internal flash, well thats nice but in times like these, why not use 128 GB which costs almost the same? (if you dont use ssd, that is)
and i'm really looking forward to their CPU
