I have been trying and can't do it, when I choose the swiss.dol, it opens up and says it is reading the SD card in Slot A and stays like that :\ no reaction at all, just frozen :\

EDIT: ok, found a way to make it work, and here is my experience:

Some of the games refused to render in 16:9, like mario kart, which looked distorted, and metroid prime 2, which didn't work at all.

Twilight Princess was definitely in 16:9, although the intro video (I think) wasn't.

Tried Resident Evil 4, very nice resolution, but the problem was that the cube didn't like being pushed so hard lol so the game was a bit slow, especially in the videos, the image was slower comparing to the sound, so it was desynchronized.

Also, tried Resident Evil 1, very nice resolution, yet a bit slow and when I tried to change something on the menu it just froze, so I had to reset the console.

Resident Evil 0 also, excellent resolution, a bit slow.

Resident Evil 3 - the intro images + videos looked awful, but during the gameplay... AWESOME!!!! Really! Looks great! Incredible resolution! :O

So, in some games the cube just couldn't handle such high resolution.

If you're playing games from SD then the slowness is caused by that

I have tested only one game so far, Tales of Symphonia EUR. And it wasn't in 16:9. At least I didn't notice any difference.
I also have forced 480p on this game which caused approximately one inch of the bottom screen to be lost. That's however unrelated to 16:9 forcing. I also noticed at the center of the screen one weird looking line. Don't know how to describe it, it looked like the screen was going to be teared apart in the center. All in all 480p doesn't make this game too enjoyable.

The cube should be able to handle that resolution as it support some games in 16:9 natively. The reason (i think) that this is working at all is that the actual 'view' limits are hardcoded to 4:3 in some games (the limits where object are visible) and the forcing pushes the limits to the 16:9 resolution where you can simply see some more of the area (just like over stretching flash games). This could however show some glitches as you are not supposed to see the area further than the designed 4:3 limits. In theory, the cube doesn't has to do that much extra work.

Also, I could be completely off but in that case I'd like some technical info about this new gem of a feature. :)

This is really good, maybe some sort of wiki list should be set up so users can check off games that can support Widescreen? (If it hasn't already been done)

The difference is extremely noticeable for some games.
Like this for example:

Normal
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/16014878/2012-0 ... .27.05.jpg

Widescreen
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/16014878/2012-0 ... .17.39.jpg

Normal
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/16014878/2012-0 ... .28.54.jpg

Widescreen
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/16014878/2012-0 ... .20.38.jpg

I can
I tested Phantasy Star Online: Epsiode 1&2 PAL earlier but I couldn't see a difference, has anyone got a list of games they've tried that have worked?

EDIT:
Thought Luigi deserved some attention.

Normal
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/16014878/2012-0 ... .12.16.jpg

Widescreen
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/16014878/2012-0 ... .11.22.jpg

I am now tempted to re-play Luigi's Mansion for the umpteenth time.

wow, thanks for the pics. I agree, a force 16:9 compatibility list is needed.

I must say, after trying it out, this brings about a whole new freshness to the GameCube and its collection of games.
I'd like to know more about how it works in general to see if there's a way to get games like Phantasy Star Online: Episode 1&2 to run in Widescreen. Imagine playing that online in widescreen! If we can find out what's stopping them from running in widescreen we can probably open up a can of pure awesome for other games. Metroid Prime 2: Echoes as stated above, doesn't work but it'd be great to find out why and see if it's possible to get more replay value out of some old games.

PAL Games I've tested on a PAL GameCube.

Super Mario Sunshine - Works
Luigi's Mansion - Works
Phantasy Star Online: Episode 1&2 - Doesn't work
Phantasy Star Online Episode 3: Card Revolution - Doesn't work

Tomorrow I'll give others a try, mainly:

Pikmin
Sonic Adventure 2: Battle
Donkey Konga
Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
Wind Waker
etc

If you're trying these games from disc it won't work - it only works for single DOL games.

I haven't been using my gamecube for a couple of months and it's been gathering dust, decided to come back here and noticed this topic. Flashed widescreen swiss-lz.dol to my Qoob pro and tested out IDE-EXI+HDD but can't read from IDE-EXI.
HDD is powered on and I see a green active LED on the actual IDE-EXI adapter but after I select IDE-EXI as source it just jumps back. Select it once more and everything freezes right there. HDD tested on PC and everything's fine there.

IDE-EXI broken?

In the latest SVN ide-exi is broken unless you're running v2 firmware on it which I only have (I plan to fix it - it's high on my todo list). It's one of the top reasons I haven't released builds of current SVN.

I meant what if I'm running r124 and happens what Burbruee said.
Select IDE-EXI ->menu jumps back ->select again->freezes.

Yes, it's because r124 has broken IDE-EXI support too. Use r94.

So on the topic of the actual widescreen hack..
If you're trying these games from disc it won't work - it only works for single DOL games.
So not using discs, and not using IDE-EXI since it's not working in this build. What's left? SD-gecko?

Would someone be nice enough to compile r94 with added widescreen-hack for IDE-EXI use? Would be greatly appreciated..

Great work on widescreen! Not from disc, but will it work from WKF? And did someone test Super Smash Bros Melee already :).

bah! I'll stop the confusion now. It WORKS from disc, but not discs that have multiple DOL files on them.
