I MEGA messed up my MEGA3

Post by siphoned » Sat Feb 22, 2014 5:31 am

My MEGA3 won't switch over to VGA mode. Could the switch have just gone bad or is there a bigger problem? Anyone else had this problem?

It was tested (long time ago) on an LCD TV with a VGA input but the screen just said 'not supported' whenever I turned on the Gamecube. The component hook up worked great and that was how I was going to use it anyway. Now I may want to use it on the VGA port on another TV and leave the TV's component hook up for something else but the cube doesn't seem to be switching over to the VGA mode.

Just for testing...... I took the cube back to the original 'not supported' TV and now I can't even get that to show up. What did I mess up? How did I kill the VGA port on the MEGA3?

connect both component and VGA connections to your TV..

turn on TV and select component input
start up the GC with the MEGA3 switch in component mode

select a title with 480p
select progressive mode
wait for the screen to switch into progressive mode

then change the TV to VGA input
then flip the switch on the MEGA3 to VGA...

what happens?

Hooked up component and VGA connections.

Start up Chibi-Robo with TV and MEGA3 set to component.

Turn on progressive mode. Screen says progressive mode is on and I start playing the game. All good so far.

I change the TV over to VGA and I now get a bad green washed out display of the game. I can play the game but the screen only seems to display shades of green. So I flip the MEGA3 switch over to VGA. Nothing happens. I can turn the TV back to the component input and the screen is all good. I can flip the MEGA3 switch all I want and nothing changes.

So..... I messed up the MEGA3 switch somehow....... yes?

The wires all LOOK fine. I used those 'pin header' wires so I can pull them on/off the board without soldering them to the pins. Maybe they don't make a good connection like I thought they did.

I took all the wires off the MEGA3. Looked at them. Scratched my beard. Put all the wires back where they go. Made a puzzled kind of grimace face. Hooked the cube back up to the TV and did the same test again. Now I have no screen on the VGA input. Not even the washed out green tone screen. I'm back to just a black screen on the VGA side. I can flip the MEGA3 switch all I want and it never disrupts the screen on the component input. Bad switch..... bad wire..... don't know what I did to it..... looks like I'll leave it on component for now.

do you have a really old CRT computer monitor?
thats about the only way to test functionality of VGA...(assuming the monitor can also handle 15khz interlaced...

that is one of the downfalls of the VGA mod, very few displays fully support it

I don't think I have an old CRT anymore to test with. I'll move other devices around, keep the cube on component. Thanks!
