no sound japan mobo in usa console

Post by discgolfer72 » Tue Jan 10, 2017 4:49 am

just bought a big pile of gamecubes
and after the first 14 only one was totally dead (bad mobo). the rest were just weak lasers and stuck reset switches

So i picked up a lot of "tested" motherboards on feepay , but they are all ntsc-j
and after installing 2 different boards , the cube boots up but I'm getting no sound
the second one I installed a jumper on to convert to ntsc-u
and I can see that it boots up and was able reset time and date
just no sound output

did I get hosed on these motherboards
or is the power supply different, causing the sound problems (only thing I can see to cause this )

Try a different power supply board if they're DOL-001 motherboards to confirm.

12v is fed to the amp.

On some rare occasions the powerboard does something funky to cause an issue with 12v.
Try another powerboard.
If that doesnt work, check if the amp is getting 12v

thanks guys

I brought them with me to my arcade store today (I have more test equipment here)
www.daydreamskc.com (lol shameless plug)

and after a bit of testing it seems it is the power supply
I installed the motherboards into one of the working cubes and sound was working

so glad to know I didn't get shafted on the mobos

and with a blown motherboard originally , I assume the bad power supply is what wiped the original motherboard

is this a common failure on theses power boards
is it just a bad cap problem (or am I looking at bad voltage regulators/transistors)
if its caps I have plenty on hand so it might be worth a fix
otherwise I found a replacement on feepay for4$ shipped

A+ thanks lol

I went ahead and used my cap tester on the power supply
showed 2 bad caps
so I replaced them
now have 12 v again

I ended up cannibalizing the cube for some other parts so now I have a spare for the next batch I dig into

I spent all day yesterday installing region switches on 9 of the cubes lol
ugg the solder points are soooo tiny had to go out and buy a helping hands just to see them

lol busy day
