*RESPECT*

I never opend a GC PAD is it that white board.
The button layout would be typically for cube.
I think I would have run out of colors ;P

Yep the white board is the guts of a regular GC controller. Opted to use it because I wanted to retain the rumble feature which the classic controller doesn't have :/

Looks like some of the right people noticed this cause its ended up here: http://hackaday.com/2011/04/30/hackaday ... pril-30th/ :D

Not sure if this is a good thing or not. Seems like Engadget attracts a lot of haters bitching about my lack of a tripod. w/e I guess, still pretty cool.

Hey Ashen, I just read that you're considering to sell those units for $1000.00 USD. Have you been serious :? ?

it's somewhere in the portable discussion thread where he's stating how much he would be charging and WHY.
seemed definetly reasonable to me.

Yes, If and when I start producing these to sell $1000.00 USD will be the cost of a finished unit. Trust me, I know it sounds crazy expensive for what it is and I'll never dispute that. You have to consider a lot of things though. The build cost alone is a couple hundred dollars, varying depending on how much stuff I need to order, shipping costs, etc. Then you have to figure that each unit is hand built by me, or some other modder like Zenloc for example. It really takes A LOT of time/work invested to get a finished product. Even if someone got really good at doing this the best they'd be able to do is a portable every 2-3 weeks, and even that is wishful thinking. I'm not sure how many hours I have into these but I can tell you its a shit-ton.

All that being said. Yes, I will make a bunch of these up and sell them. That's been my plan for a long time. I'm not going to dedicate my life to it though. Meaning that Its going to be something done in my free time and not rushed along like production with a deadline. It may take me 2 years to make up 10 of them, I cant really say. I have other projects that I'd love to work on also (I'm already planning a Wii laptop and an original XBOX laptop). Zenloc and I are looking into ways to produce the cases in a faster/easier manner, which would eliminate about 70% of the work that goes into this. If we end up being able to make them faster or actually have the cases made it would speed up the process a lot and possibly reduce the end asking price a bit. I'm not going to get my hopes up though.

Honestly, if you asked me if I would pay 1000$ for one of these I'd tell you that I probably wouldn't. I love the GC and all but man, that's a lot of cheese! But, I know I can do it myself for half the cost or so and end up with a pretty decent looking, working end product. Plus its something I like to do already. I'd recommend to anyone willing to invest a bit of time to do it themselves. Its so much more gratifying doing it yourself than buying one, especially with such a high price tag. The Benheck, Modretro and Modded by Bacteria forums all have a ton of wonderfully useful modding information/guides for every system scattered across them that helps a ton when working on projects like this. I'd recommend checking them out if the price of one of these has you cringing :D

Well I guess I have to save some money, because I really want one of these and I am all thumbs when it comes to building such electronic products myself :P Looking forward to your other projects too.

Cheers

Just something leaps in my mind, can I save PAL saves and NTSC saves to the built-in memory card at the same time or do I have to backup saves of a specific region to the SD gecko/SD card and reformat the memory card if I want to use saves from a different region? What region do your gamecubes have that you are using for those units?

Oh and will the final units have headphone jacks? (Please let them have a headphone jack :D )

you can have pal and ntsc-U saves on the same memory card, but not ntsc-J + any other region on the same memory card.

It was going to be the power port for charging the batteries. Since I decided against using the lithium polymer battery's these were designed around its just an extra power jack. Useless now really.

Just to be sure, I prefer playing games on a handheld with headphones rather than with the built-in speakers. Will the final builts have a headphone jack? I think it's not too hard to add it.

These units don't include a headphone jack. Personally I would have never used it anyway. But yes, it would require little effort to include a switching headphone jack. The new design will include things like this. Plus TV out, 4 player support of some type... and batterys :D

New video is up. Less of me talking, more game play and showing off what it can do. I didn't take any new pics. You guys get the idea by now. :D

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ywckV09cuV4

Still a few small things to do to the black unit. I need to install a 8v step down regulator to run the fan off of. I've ordered the parts but need to wait till they come in. The reason for this is the fan I used in the 2nd unit runs off 5v but it doesn't keep things that cool. 8v should provide a nice happy medium between fan loudness and cooling. I also need to open it back up to re-install the filtering caps on the video and audio lines. I'm getting a bit of interference on both lines for w/e reason in this unit and I think that will probably fix it.

Putting together this 2nd unit had its own set of problems. I ended up killing the original MB that was supposed to go in it, had some more fan issues (killed another ATI cooling fan in the process). I managed to somehow scratch the screen slightly in the upper right hand corner... Its barely noticeable while playing though thanks to some "homebrew" ways of fixing LCD scratches, thank goodness. I went through 3 sets of L/R buttons until I finally got the painting results I wanted on them and I managed to somehow glob some epoxy through one of the tiny speaker holes. I also managed to epoxy in the SD card in the SD Gecko slot in this one... thankfully I was able to pry it out and clean it up. I'll have to refine my way of mounting things into the case for the next units... All in all, besides those few minor flaws I think this one turned out just as nice or nicer than the first unit. Glad to be able to move on to rev. 2 or maybe even a new project in between. Thanks again to everyone here who helped and supported me along the way. :D
