Loading GameCube Games from HD. Best solution? *Noob*

Post by fandangos » Mon Feb 13, 2012 6:01 pm

Hey, I must say that I'm kind noob at Gamecube and since the entire US library of the Gamecube fits in a 2TB HD this may be a nice solution for an ultimate gamecube.

I saw the GC IDE-EXI Adapter but as far as I understand it needs some software to run from the DVD drive. I'm looking for a dvd drive free solution.
Just power the game cube and you will have the entire solution ready for you.

So, which hardwares and softwares exist for this task?

Which file system does it use?

Which kind of files does it load? iso?

How can you power the HD? Is there any voltage available for an HD plugged in the gamecube?

The Viper GC Extreme has a usb port, can a usb HD be used there?

Yes EXI IDE is one option but the best method is to use a WODE (Wii optical drive emulator) and you may plug usb hdd into here and power through this.. a modification must be made to plug the wode flatcable into where the GC DVD drive slots into on the motherboard Ashen has provided a small number of these adapters professionally made and others have made there own.

I've PMed Ashen and I would like to know where can I get "wode"? :P

Wode only has usb and sd loading

you can get a wode from many online retailers such as:
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/wode-jukeb ... -wii-33938
http://discoazul.co.uk/wode-jukebox-wii.html

The wode has a launcher app included and you can also specify your own "config iso".

I have to agree that since the IDE-EXi is no longer being "mass produced" that the WODE is the absolute best way to get GC games onto a HDD. However, unless you're good with modding I'd suggest just looking for a "broken" Wii on eBay or Craigslist. You can find many Wii units that "won't read discs" that still work just fine for very cheap. It'll be much easier for you to hook up a WODE on a Wii than a GC. Currently I'm not making anymore plug and play adapters for the GameCube nor do I intend to in the foreseeable future.

That all being said, if you're hellbent on actually using a GameCube+WODE and are mod-savy then you can find the tutorials I've made to connect a WODE to the GC here:

http://www.gc-forever.com/forums/viewto ... f=26&t=416
and
http://www.gc-forever.com/forums/viewto ... f=26&t=759

Keep in mind that the WODE doesn't fully support GC audio streaming, which can be a turnoff for some people.

2TB external via USB works fine on the WODE.

You don't need any homebrew to load ISOs from the WODE because it emulates the optical drive so you just copy the ISOs to your HDD and boot them from the slave board with the LCD and joystick. Although you can use homebrew for example Swiss or the WODE config ISO to boot games.

I am fairly certain the first IDE-EXI has DMA support.

Paul.str: It has, but a new firmware has to be released. emu_kidid and isobel (-> gc-linux) worked on it lately.

I have no problem in modding. I've installed the Qoob SX modchip and as far as I see the wode is "solderless".

Can you explain this "Keep in mind that the WODE doesn't fully support GC audio streaming, which can be a turnoff for some people." ?

You mean that a few games might have the soundtrack turned off?

EDIT: found this "You could use FSTFix on your Gamecube ISO".
So all that's needed is a full list of gamecube games that use audio streaming.

EDIT2:

Found this list:
007 Agent Under Fire
1080
Alien Hominid
Bomberman Generations
Crazy Taxi
Dragonball Z Sagas
Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters
Ikaruga
MX Superfly
Naruto 2
Pool Paradise
Red Faction 2
Super Monkey Ball
Tak And The Power Of Juju
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4
Wave Race: Blue Storm
XG3 Extreme G Racing

So, would be possible to load those games via mini dvd-r and all the rest from the Wode?

The WODE is solderless only if you use it on a Wii as it was intended. To hook a WODE up to a GameCube requires some serious modding. Its not really comparable to installing a qoob, its much more extensive.

Audio streaming games will play on the WODE, however the streaming audio is silenced.

Yeah, the thread right below this one is talking about a way to fix it.

And yes, I saw the tutorial and it's a very serious work but doable.

The IDE-EXi solution does have this same problem? Or if I find it, I'll be able to have a ultimate solution for my gamecube?
