Hi,

wii u has already been exploited, somehow: http://www.gamesradar.com/wii-u-acciden ... ersehacked

Nintendo says it's been a mock-up, i don't know since i'm not really into this, just wanted to share it :D

Edit: Just tought: it could also be a plan of nintendo, to create such a mock up, to hipe the wii-u for everybody how want's to run homebrew...
Why don't they learn and just create an api for everybody for their console... hacker thinking != commerical thinking ^^

The wii compatible mode can already be exploited with smash stack (source: crediar@gbatemp) and they are working to get hackmii installer/hbc working. I think it takes a while to find an exploit in wiiu mode.

The mockup you are refering to is legit, it is some debug code left in the miiverse.

Same case with the 3DS and being able to run flashcarts. If Nintendo did things right the Wii U side of things is locked down so that the Wii mode won't allow anything to escape.

The same applied to the wii, maybe time for a tweezer attack? :D http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Tweezer_Attack

Are the WiiU discs some sort of blu-ray? I was so upset to find out that the WiiU can't do movie playback. It would be so cool if the homebrew scene can bring the ability to play movies and, who knows, maybe blu-rays.

it's proprietary again, but holds 25GB, same as a blu-ray ;)
we'll have to see ... oh and one more important thing: the discs have rounded edges :P

thats a normal bluray like early on the original wii where they used normal dvds and only didnt pay for licences for the video playback. thats the same and only for the reason that nintendo has not to pay for licences.

It's supposed to be a game console. I don't expect movie playback.

yeah, but hackers also have brought dvd playback support to the wii, so why hackers wont bring bluray support to the wiiu?

It is a game console but if it's got a dvd drive why not watch DVDs on it or use it any other way.
WiiMC is an amazing piece of software and I've used it for at least 2 years, this was my main way to watch movies (mostly streamed from my laptop) If the same can be done on the WiiU someday with possibly support for HD movies or at least smooth H.264 playback I will be very happy

We have USB, external Blu-ray drives always exist.

Wii U has hardware H.264 decoding, but that's boring.
Using software decoding, 10-bit 720p or 8-bit 1080p should be possible with 2 threads.

Now the question is, how will it handle the new HEVC standard?
