Hi guys,

Just began playing Eternal Darkness and for the first time I started to get this error message that an error has occurred, consult the manual. What is this? Google speculates scratched discs or dirty lenses - but has no definitive answers. The ED disc is original and have some minor scratches, but no worse than other ebay games I got that plays just fine.
It also seem to happens completely randomly.
Help? :)

how are you loading it? from Wii or GC? if on the Wii are you using a cMIOS/GC backup launcher? If on GC is it modded?

There are a number of things that can cause a game to spit this at you. if many games are doing it check you POT and adjust. If just one game it's likely scratched or damaged and it can't read. again adjusting the POT may help if it's just lightly scratched try one of those disc fixing tools If it's a modded GC it may be a problem with the BIOS that the chip uses If it's a wii with a cMIOS or a crappy modchip this game is known to cause trouble.

Sorry for the inconsistent info.
It's a jpn dol-001 gamecube, only mod is a jpn/us switch and pot is untouched.
It's also the only game giving trouble, but as I wrote the disc only have some minor scratches.

I *think* there's a lot more sound from the laser when playing ED compared to other games, but I don't have enough experience with GC to really know if that's the case.

Any ideas how to start troubleshooting?

New laser unit?

ED is known to be choosey regarding dvd reads.
I suggest lowering the pot a bit and test it again.

in fact, any game which uses heavy audio streaming (Eternal Darkness) is known to be more picky since there are times where it may have to seek back and fourth from Audio streaming reads to Data reads.

Pot is on the factory setting, I assume.
As the error is random it's quite frustrating to try to adjust to pot. Random terror.
How about buying a new laser unit?

Yeah that'd fix it.
