Media Player Homebrew?

Post by tehscene » Wed Apr 14, 2010 5:10 am

Does the gamecube have a media player like MPlayer Ce or SMS? I haven't scene one yet during my research. Thanks for any info provided.

Lookup MFE, it's a bundled linux distro with mplayer and a fancy GUI. There's no standalone homebrew for it yet, but we'll see what I can do.

Thanks everybody. I appreciate all the help. No samba for now but loading avi's via SD will do nicely. I'm awaiting that emu board =).

Just a small note the sd-version has to be loaded via Slot-A it won't work with Slot-B it fails when trying to find the mfe-fs.bz2 to decompress it also won't load with the sdml dol loader you get a black screen so you'll have to load it with sdload instead.

The PS2 have that SMS Player, its a very complete player with lots of features, and the ps2 isn't so powerfull as gamecube.

We could compare the gamecube like an iMac G3, the PowerPC 450Mhz its like an Pentium III 800Mhz+, and the GameCube is an PowerPC 486Mhz and optimized.

If this thing had a lot of ram it could (talking about powerfullnes) run Mac OS X Tiger! :p
(correctme if i'm wrong)

So, easily it can run a very good movie, music, and so, player.

Need help to load mfe on cube with XenoGC 2.
My experience (mortimor mfe):
sdboot 0.4 -> "DSI exception" in any case
sdLoad + Fat32 -> red screen
sdLoad + 2Gb Fat -> "SD I/O error, sector 0" on 1st linux boot screen and stops
sdLoad + 256Mb Fat -> "cannot mount /dev/sd" on 2nd linux boot screen and reboots
Any tips from people who manage to load mfe from sd ...

Check that it's FAT16 formatted then check it for errors and fragments by right clicking the drive in My Computer, Properties, Tools.
Sometimes curruption is caused on sdcard and you'll end up with a load of found.??? folders and File????.chk files in this case it's best to either just delete the files / folders or reformat the drive, unless you plan on identifing said files in a hexeditor and renaming them to their original state :geek:

Well, I tried few more SD cards: 2 GB (Transcend, x133 and x150) - "I/O error", 64 Mb miniSD (Nokia) - "cannot mount", 1 GB (Transcend, x80) - works. Fat16, via sdLoad.
But my test video (avi: 640x360, xvid+mp3, 768+128) doesn't run smoothly. It's occasionally stutters and freezes. Which video format is better for this mfe?

While we're on the topic, Do you guys think that a cube could feasibly run boxee and/or XBMC? I personally love boxee and think that I would prefer a boxee cube over a boxee box if you know what I mean.

I've been interested in porting MPlayer CE to the GameCube for a while.
However, my unit is still not homebrew enabled.

Hello there, I'm back with an alpha-quality build which I've attached below.

Notes:
  • Only has minimal codecs support.
I have no idea if SMB actually works as I don't have a BBA yet.
No stream cache, I got to fight with AESND over the control of the ARAM.
    No DVD, FTP, HTTP...
A rough video preview can be seen here.

Extrems, that's some awesome work! Why were you battling with AESND over control of the ARAM? (AESND should be using ARQ to access ARAM in a Queue)

I may have missed one reset call.

On another note, I have some serious I/O problems with the SD Gecko bogging down the CPU.
Is DVD, SMB or even the IDE-EXI any better?

DVD would be better as it's DMA, but SDGecko is polled I/O - same goes for IDE-EXI.

Also, I couldn't even boot the thing, just resets my cube.

Insert an USB Gecko in Slot B, do you see anything?

Works in both Slot A & B for me, I had to load it via SD-Load like your video though, SDML's dol loader just BlSoD on me.
Aspect ratio is wrong on my PAL gamecube in original mode though the image is too big, I had to set to 16:9 to read the first title headings of the OSD.

Thanks for the media player! :)
Does it support SDHC cards? I try to swap my 2GB in SDLOAD to a 4GB one, but MPLAYER can't find the needed folders.

I'm booting it on a unmodded PAL gamecube via SDML using SD-Load's dol loader instead of SDML's using it's included SD gecko apdaptor and 1GB unbranded SD card.
Perhaps your booting it on a modded cube emu_kidd? and it's dol loader isn't compatible.
