XenoGC / SD-Card newbie needs help questions over questions

Hello,

im new here and from germany so im sorry for my bad english.

I recently got a Gamecube (black PAL) for free with some very hard scratched games so I want to play them over a SD-Card.

Is it possible to make a XenonGC and then to start via a startup-DVD games from this adapter: http://www.dx.com/p/wiikey-sd-card-adap ... 0LRUldy-nk ? i hope shoplinks are allowed.

Or is it possible to start an adapter like I linked directly over the XenoGC without a DVD ?

Do you know an SD-Card adapter which you have already successfully used?

Do you know a better, easier method?

Is it possible to start games (DVDs not from SD-Card) directly with the XenoGC or will I need to insert a startup-DVD and it put out and insert the game DVD ?

Do you know where I will get the newest XenonGC firmware for flashing on a microcontroller?

I hope you will answer all the questions you know something about.

I looking forward to you help (:

So, in order :
-No, you need a Swiss DVD inserted (you can burn it).
-Any of them work. These are just passive pin adapters.
-Yes, see WiiKey/WASP Fusion + Megadrive adapter (coming soon).
-The XenoGC can boot backups straight from DVD.
-Take a look at the wiki.

Thank you for your answers (:

But how can I start a Swiss DVD ? Is it possible with a Xenon GC ? (If i understood right it is not?)

And there is no possibility to play over a SD-Card adapter with a Xenon GC? (Sorry but i want to be sure ^^ Im a newbie )

I think you mean this link from the wiki: viewtopic.php?f=15&t=439 ?

So the attached files from the first post in the thread are the newest version?

Or are these newer? http://code.google.com/p/xenogcfork/downloads/list (In the Download section)

Edit: Do you know if the SD-Card adapter which I linked is called "SD-Gecko" ? If it is not do you want to explain?

Thank you !

XenoGC is a modchip. It will allow to boot DVD-R game backups or homebrews (also burned on DVD) like eg Swiss. Once you boot swiss you can boot games from SD Card reader. So XenoGC isn't necessaery - necessary is a way to boot homebrew (Swiss) - with XenoGC you can do that.

I have exactly the same SDreader as you've posted (also bought on DX) - works great.

First of all it's Xeno, not Xenon. :P
It is possible to burn a Swiss DVD and boot it with the Xeno.
You can play from an SD card thanks to Swiss. Basically any means of booting Swiss will allow you to do so.
That's not the wiki but yes it's the right link.
Yes.
That file should be the same as the other one.
SD card adapter = SD Gecko. It's just the way we call it. So the answer is yes.

ok thank you (:

Xenon was a typing error

I also have read about the SD Media Launcher.
Does its DVD enables to start games directly via a SD Gecko? (Without a hardware modification?)
If yes is there a possibility to get its DVD image from the web? (I dont know if it is legal?)

And i also want to know if you already have build a XenoGC? Because I will need help to flash the firmware to a microcontroller.

I have a AVR STK500 board, an arduino and an adapter for the parallel port to a PC. These are my resources for flashing.

Is there any step-by-step how to flash the Atmel microcontroller?

Can you explain it to me?

SD Media Launcher is an alternative. It's annoying though because you need an SD card that is 4GB or less with Swiss on it then boot Swiss, swap the SD card for a bigger one and finally load your game. And no you can't just burn a copy of it. You need an original.
I have not built one personally so I can't help you for that matter but since you asked where to buy one I guess it's a better idea.

Thank you.

And SD Media Launcher wont need a hardware modification?

Maybe you know somebody here who successfull flashed a chip?

Or is here another with experience? HELP ! :P

Yes, SDML doesn't need HW mod. But I think modchip is best solution (even if you want to play games from SD).

Did you read this?

Thank you.

Yes I read this. The hardware is not problem, but I dont understand how to flash the files and which one? I downloaded the archives and they are contain several files.

And there is a table in the site: Included HEX & DOLS I dont know what the content in this table means. And what is a DOL ?

I need a step-by-step guide for dummies :P

Or an explanation how and where to start :?

For first you need to programm device using Serial or USB programmer:
http://www.gc-forever.com/wiki/index.ph ... Updating_2

Use XenoAT.1.05.hex

And if your modchip is already working you can update Xeno via GC booting DOL file (DOL is like EXE in windows, XBE in Xbox etc). But AFAIK 1.05 is the newest FW for xeno.

Thank you.

Is the XenoAT.1.05.hex the newest firmware?

I will flash to a naked untouched Atmel 8L.

Is the programmer from the wiki with the parallel port a good one? Or which one did you used or you can recommend?

Can I flash the naked microcontroller via the Gamecube?

Which software on Windows 7 shell I use to flash the hex file to the uC ? Is AVR Studio a good decision or is there a special one for this ?
As far as I know 1.05 is the newest FW.
Serial/Parallel programmer are the easiest way to programm micro chips in my opinion (easy to build, cheap parts etc). About software - I don't know - but even if programm application won't work under Win7, you can alwasy install Linux/WinXP under VM and programm from there ;)

Thank you.

Have you already flashed your own chip? If yes can you tell me which equipment you used?

No, I have original XenoGC ;)

But I guess you ever flashed an uC (microcontroller) ?

Yes ;) I also have Arduino :P But for simple projects I like to build serial programmers ;)

Thank you

nice ;)

Can you tell me how I flash the hex file to the uC?

Which program you suggest?

I just downloaded WinAVR but i dont know how to flash the hex to the chip.

Now the wiki says: Edit Makefile as necessary to include your WinAVR Path

Which Makefile ? Where it is? Or I have to create one? I dont understand this point.

Can you explain how to flash the files with AVRDude?

you have a stk and arduino but do not understand anything about flashing??
maybe it would be easier to buy a xeno since it appears you have a lot to learn about MCUs..

then later on try again at making one once you have a better understanding of MCUs and a better understanding of of how Xeno works to help you troubleshoot when things are not working properly

The Arduino is not a good way to learn how MCUs work. It has all kinds of "magic" stuff that make it a lot easier to program for, and a custom MCU bootloader to program it over RS232 without a programmer.

the stk should allow more of a true development platform than the arduino...

it is unfortunate gamecubeFuzzi has been exposed to the training wheels that arduino suckers people into with its marketing to promote ease of use...easy of use without having to understand...
prime example is the fact of not knowing how to flash a atmel despite the 100000000 of google hits which show how to use avrdude or something similar...

to explain breifly
hitting the compile button in the training wheels program is the same thing as typing "make."
the training wheels program produces a hex file hidden in a temp directory which the user typically has no idea of its existance.
then flashing the chip is simply calling the flash commands and using the hexfile...

it possible with a modded firmware to boot a dol from a sd adapter, that code probably replace the multi-game shell but there not really a point, you need a disc inserted if the goal is to preserve the dvd drive a swiss bootdisk will give you the same result and will be simpler.

I must disagree arduino make it easy to program a MCU but you can use arduino/c/c++ and registry setting in any combinations in a sketch making it also a great tool for more advance user.
