[SOLVED] WASP Fusion + MEGAdrive v3 = Trouble booting?

Post by FishamanP » Thu Jan 26, 2017 2:37 am

I recently got 2 WASP Fusions and 2 MEGAdrive v3's, and I've been trying to get them to work in my IPL1.1 Gamecube.
The Gamecube at first would only tell me there was no disc inserted, at which point I realized my MEGAdrive did not have any connections soldered.
After soldering P29 to GND and the two LID pads together, my GC will flash between "Please insert a NINTENDO GAMECUBE disc" and "Reading disc..." about twice per second.
This happens with both WASPs; I haven't tried the second MEGAdrive. Any clue what the problem could be?

The LID solder joint looks solid. P29... not so much, but it looks like it should still be making a connection.

EDIT: Redid the P29 solder connection cleanly, as well as a perfect solder job on the 2nd MEGAdrive. Still doing it.
The WASP's blue light will only flicker on for a few ms every time it flashes "Reading disc...". Otherwise it's off.

WASP Fusion usually reports no disk inserted when there is no SD Card present.

Have you tried a different SD card? Have you made sure your SD card is formated as FAT32 with 32k allocation unit size?

Also, are your WASP Fusion's flashed with Swiss-GC or the Wii Key firmware? When I purchased my WASP Fusion I first had to use a Wii to flash Swiss-GC onto it before I could use it with my GameCube.

My WASPs didn't come from BadAss Consoles, so I assume they came with Wiikey firmware.
Neither my FAT32 2GB SD Card nor my 32GB WBFS SDHC card had any effect in the Wiikey reader.
The error message cycling still happened with no SD inserted at all.

Problem solved. Turns out [P29]/GND must be toggled at least once while the system is on.
Everyone else reading this, drive down to your local RadioShack and get those normally closed switches!

You mean P29, right?

You need pin 29 if it's not running firmware 1.0 with the proper settings. Once you've downgraded and configured it, and flashed Swiss, it'll boot without the pin 29 switch.

Yes, I did mean Pin 29.

I'm curious now. What's the point of flashing 1.0? I just flashed Swiss straight from the stock 1.4 firmware and it seems to be working fine, though I haven't transplanted it into my IPL1.0 Panasonic Q yet.

1.0 allows proper autoboot and DVD passthrough, not 100% sure what the details are but 1.0 was determined to be the best. I think if you flash Swiss, you will downgrade to 1.0 anyway so don't bother really, as long as you don't need pin 29 to boot anymore.

When I boot, Swiss is automatically inserted, but not automatically launched. Which is "proper" autoboot, the former or latter?
I have 2 WASPs, so if I try to franken a Swiss menu onto Wiikey 1.0 firmware, can I boot the working one and hotswap in Swiss to flash back if it goes wrong?

The latter, but you wouldn't get autoload with the wrong setup either. Depends on the SD card at this point, you can short LID to ground to get autoboot if you don't already have it though.

And yes, you can hotswap wasps.

Since Swiss didn't see the WKF 1.3 update as a valid ISO, I decided not to try a franken firmware.
I then successfully transplanted the MEGAdrive v3 (close fit!) and WASP into my Panasonic Q.

Interestingly enough, the exact setup that only produced autoload on IPL1.1 instead got full autoboot on IPL1.0.

That is not surprising. The stock wasp firmware will not work with ipl 1.0 but swiss will.

I just thought it was weird that Swiss would autoboot on 1.0, but not 1.1.

That's just the wasp being very unpredictable.

Hey guys, sorry for bringing up a solved thread, but where can I get either a Wii key fusion or a wasp? I am looking all over and it's all out of stock.

Either that, or if there's a place I can get the Gerbers and firmware so I can solder and make my own?

It's closed source, it may come back into stock or an alternative will probably pop up soon enough to replace it.

Hey I ended up getting one. I did some research on that chip, and it does seem to have a back door. Has anyone tried to extract the data from it?

It would seem obvious that someone would have tried, but I'd like to know. A quick search led to nowhere. I have a few dev tools and am willing to give it a try and see if I can reverse this thing, but I don't want to get into any trouble or anything like that.

Thanks for your feedback guys.

**EDIT** I found the thread that explains a lot about reverse engineering this thing. Sorry for the pointless post.
