Is there a patch for Zeldas/Metroid/etc inverted X/Y axis?

Post by keropi » Tue Jul 01, 2014 9:16 am

Hiya!

it always bothered me that Nintendo didn't think it would be useful to include a damned option so people get to decide how their X/Y analog stick camera axis works... When I press UP I want to look UP , not down like I am flying a plane or something
Has anyone made a patch to fix that in the most popular titles like the Zeldas/Metroid ?

Metroid has a "Reverse Y-Axis" option...

IIRC one of the two zeldas offer one too but no X-axis (or vise versa, can't really remember atm) , I am asking for a complete solution not just half the job :D

Why would you want to reverse the X axis? Do you play with your controller upside down or something?

This bothers me also. Not just with these games but with all games, especially newer ones where devs seem to have decided that the old standard setup for look axis no longer suits them. Seriously, why not have the option to have the axis for "look" whichever way the use likes? Games that are locked to a specific setup drive me nuts and most of the time I wont play them because of it. I played FFXI so long with the look axis's set up in such a specific way that my brain can't handle any type of deviation from it. :/

Doesn't bother me at all.
I tried playing starfox without inversion. IMPOSSIBLE.
Years of inverted games have made me immune to regular axis on pre-2005 games.

Sorry, but you guys are going to have to explain how pushing left to look right makes any sense.

It had shocking controls (why the fuck hasn't mario ever learned to turn on the spot...) but I'm pretty sure they weren't completely ass-backwards.

in Mario 64 he can turn on the spot, but yeah, I can see the Y invert cause some people are used to it (I know I am on GoldenEye) but please, who would invert X too?

I swear I've seen him turn so instantly on the spot that it looks like he walked through himself in Mario 64.

how about some DOL hexediting or something to hardwire the camera axis to "normal" standards? basically inverting the stock values...? can this be done?

you can modify the PAD read routines in the DOL to invert it, but it will be inverted everywhere

Beware, dumb question (i know you like these megaloman).
Why not to do some hardware mod on a pad, rewire the X and Y to some switch and invert them on the pad itself ?
it would be done once for every game you would like to invert the axis.
micro, from nfggames, made a little board for the N64, used to improve N64 stick. These boards have little soldering pads in order to invert the axis in a hardware way.
Maybe this idea could be adapted for the GC pad.

Hardware solution is easy. All you need is a DPDT switch for each axis. This is how I've solved the problem, guess I should have mentioned that.

Well considering starfox (which only has y axis inversion) one might want the plane to go the same way the stick goes.
If you use the default starfox setup downleft on joystick is upright on screen. Invert the y axis and downleft is downright. Flip x aswell and you got a plane going in same direction as joystick 100%.

But honestly you are right, it sounds horrible no matter the situation.

have you kept a schematic or more info regarding the installation of a switch and which wires/pads to attach it to?

Here's a quickly butchered together diagram:

Image

You need to isolate the voltage and ground pins from the analog stick to the board for each axis you want to "hot swap" and wire them to the DPDT switches as shown.

The X-axis of the manual camera in Wind Waker is inverted, when you push the C-stick to the left the camera turns right and vice versa. Additionally, the Y-axis of the subject (1st person) camera and the Y-axis of the boat cannon are inverted too.

Here're some Wind Waker AR/WiiRD codes for 'normal' controls:
