As is, a Wii needs a wiimote to launch a gamecube game, and not all Wii games are compatible with the GC controller.

Maybe there are workarounds, look at how those who built Wii-based portable gamecubes did.

If you don't have the wii sensor bar, you can do with a pair of candles among other substitutes, while third party ones may be still quite affordable.

if you unlock it, you can use NGC controller by priiloader.
hit reset at start up and you will get the priiloader menu.
there you can access your homebrew memu without the need for a wiimote.
however you will have to unlock the wii first.
you can get a borrowed control and sensor bar (candles).
after sofmod your wii; you won't need a wiimote for homebrew and nintendont.

A classic controller works too, but only if the Wiimote is present. Remember the good ol trick of lighting tea candles to work as a sensor bar?
