Stella runs very slow in OpenGL mode

I bought a Dell Optiplex 745 with Windows XP loaded as an older gaming PC- games that my 64-bit W7 can't handle, and emulators.
I've set up most emulators just fine, but Stella has issues with OpenGL I can't solve. In fullscreen mode it's very slow. In windows mode, anything above 3X zoom is very slow. Fullscreen resolution doesn't matter whatsoever. Software mode is perfectly playable even at max monitor resolution, but has screen tearing without Vsync. I've tried everything I can play with in settings but OpenGL just doesn't run well and I can not figure out why.
I tried z26 and while it's an okay emulator, it really lacks a lot of features. I can't remap joypad buttons, I get a flickering layer of pixels on the bottom edge of the game screen and it doesn't allow me to really adjust anything I want. PCAE looks to be far too outdated to bother with and there don't seem to be any other emulators for this system.
