Next Wii64 Beta and Texture Packs

Post by ShadowOne333 » Sat Feb 01, 2014 5:58 pm

Hello GC Forever community!

Since the next beta will be compatible with Texture packs for N64 games, why don't we start sharing some packs of your favorite N64 games?
Heck we can even create some to adjust our liking and even get some help to create some!

I either need to release the texture packer since Wii64 will accept only packed archives, or you can upload .7z's someplace and I can .bin them.

You mean texture packs like these ones?

Does the texture packer combine the custom textures with the .n64/.z64 game rom to produce a new .n64/.z64 file?

Yes paks like those, we pack them into a easily indexed format to avoid cluttering up the SD/etc.

Releasing the packer seems like the better option since it avoids issues of pack authors asking you not to distribute their files and takes the load off your end when people start asking for every pack and/or pack update to be converted. Of course, you'll also have a vocal minority of users who can't figure out any tool you do provide, so ... yay.

I agree, the best option will be to release the packer for the textures, since a lot of people will start asking for a specific texture pack and you would have to pack them all. By releasing the Packer, you can avoid the pain of converting every texture pack and people can eadily edit their own packs and pack them by themselves.

Also, emukidid what do you mean by "cluterring the SD"?

Instead of dumping 10,000+ files on the card for a texture pak (and having to traverse through the FAT to find entries), we have a single file which internally has all images ordered by CRC with a tiny bit of meta available to each entry to identify the image type. All the images are pre-converted into the GC/Wii GX image format so loading is also not going to require any run-time conversion. This has proven much faster than dealing with traditional texture paks and any speed gain we can have is a must.

Will we be able to load custom texture packs out of both SD and USB/HDD?

Was that truly necessary to say? ;) Maybe there should be a disclaimer asking people not to inquire about them? Like a sticky or something, requesting users not to pester emukdid about it :D

post a disclaimer and people will still ask anyways....
post a sticky and people will ask in the sticky...
lock the sticky and people will just create a new thread to ask the same old question over and over...

Well, when you put it that way, I can see why. C'est la vie... well, that proves that at least the emulators are being worked on whenever he can work on them.

I think everyone is just fed up with people asking for updates all the time, even when told to stop doing it. Threads get locked because of it.

True, true, though it would be nice if people some kind of glimmer of proof that the emulators were at least still alive, not so much an ETA, otherwise, people will likely believe that they've simply died off, never to be worked on again. So, I guess people on both sides needs to chill ;) :D

So let's say someone posts a screenshot of something amazing...or something very minor...
Just that act alone will trigger a chain reaction of excitement and stupidity..
The news will travel fast and awaken the sleeping babies..

Babies become mad they can't have the new toy and become cry babies. Cry babies know if they whine long enough, if they make as much noise as possible, it will get what it wants..

No cry baby whiners here!!!

So what happens when the cry baby whiner is tired from crying???
They go back to sleep...

Moral of the story: do not awake a sleeping cry baby whiners.

So in the end there are no updates because updates make people want more updates... Am I right?

So, in essence, when the new versions of emulators are ready to be released, they'll be released out of the blue, so to speak?
