Shuriken USB (USB Gecko SE (clone))

Post by happy_bunny » Tue Mar 10, 2015 9:09 pm

hi all first post created this
2015-04-29 23.35.01.jpg
(1.04 MiB) Not downloaded yet
ebay kicked me off :-( something about enabling copying of games, although I guess you can use it like that its really a hacking / dev tool I am selling these units for £14 + postage

tracked p&p is expensive from the UK £10 world and £8 europe, so I am going to offer proof of postage as an option basically I go to the post office send you the device for £4 and get a receipt which I will scan and email to you so you know I have sent the device. Its not quite the same as tracked post but its a lot cheaper.

its basically a USB Gecko SE, but done using a CPLD instead of a FPGA, have tested it using the emu_kids swissserver to download dol's to my gamecube seems to work ok.

PM if you want one

Nice, is it a clone of the SE (with the 16-bit commands available too)? How is the speed in comparison if you've tested it?

I like the 3D printed cases ;)

I like how you actually mounted the legs of the mini usb connecter instead of just connecting the pins like the USB gecko does.

Goob job.
But too bad, eBay don't let me acces the ordering page. I have a big red warning about f***ing "legal restriction".
Is it possible to order one from here please (even if it's not Market Place) ?
Thank you in advance.

@emu_kidid

that was fast I see you are still on the ball, it uses the SE's VHDL code has the same ID however is missing the two 16bit commands (read / write) they didn't fit inside the CPLD I used. At first I thought removing them was a bad idea, but if you look at devkitpro's usb gecko read / write functions they only use 8bit commands, hence the swissserver works without any code mod's. As for speed I am using the same FT245BL chip that the SE does for SPI to USB comms so if you did a back to back test between the SE and it clone using swiss / swissserver the speed should be the same.

The only issue I see is with the debugging does the debug_stub code in devkitpro use 16 bit commands? I need to look into this, it would be nice to be able to remotely step through my code using the shuriken USB unit.

@badsector

cheers dude, will ship it out tomorrow :-)

The original USB gecko didn't have the 16-bit commands (iirc they were originally the commands to read/write the flash memory) so I doubt any code in libogc uses them.

Yeah, the stub is 8-bit commands too.

If you could sell them on the marketplace here you'd save a few dollars on eBay fees.

Just use PayPal payment with tracked delivery and you should be fine.

marketplace?? do you have a link or steps to set something up?

would be good to reduce the price a little, the price of the PCB's is killing me its like nearly half the price of the unit crazy. If there is enough demand ie I can sell these 10 units, I will do a bigger batch order of the PCB's that should also bring the price down a little.

only tested on the GC however it should work with the wii its the same VHDL code as the SE so it should just work.

I'd order one if I didn't live in the U.S.A.... and had money. :(

This is a pretty sweet product, if you don't mind me saying.

Either rip using a Wii (to USB) or get a proper DVD drive on your pc. I used my DVD drive in the past, but the Wii is a lot faster at ripping games.

ripping via a dvd drive would be an easier option, what software works for ripping with the USB gecko SE? (I want to test it works with the shuriken USB unit).

I rip using cleanrip to SD gecko on my GC itself. That's the easiest thing to do. :P

Oh...I'm always late to the party. I do know of cleanrip but never got it working on gamecube. My wii has no working DVD drive I have no BBA for gamecube. I will find other uses for it

am I right in saying that the only two bits of software currently in active use / supported for the USB gecko are

1) swiss server
2) gecko net (used to be wiird)

is that correct ?

driver info / 3d case files / PC software

There's way more things:
wiiload (as a COM port)
geckoloader (obsolete)
swiss (as a COM port) for debug
wiiRD / kenobi debug patch
libOGC debug stub
