New IPL replacement modchip: HyperBoot

Post by andzlay » Thu Nov 07, 2019 2:59 pm

Soo... apparently mega/badassconsoles secretly released a new IPL replacement modchip.
https://www.badassconsoles.com/hyperboot/
Features:

Directly Boot Homebrew from SD card
Supports SD, SDHC, SDXC
Compatible for all regions (PAL, USA and Japan)
Bypass mode to jump into original system menu
Built-in update menu
Updates performed by the console itself (Eliminates the need for JTAG)
CLI Support for homebrew lacking a proper menu
USB Gecko support
btw: Is he not active on gc-forever anymore?

I'd love to buy a few, nice to have something from this decade compared to a Qoob Pro

I'm pretty interested in getting one of these myself. The price of non-disc access to Swiss is great. I had been eyeing the new ODE from citrus, but those seem fairly out of stock as well.

Has anyone contacted megalomaniac about when more units might be available? (it's his site and storefront, right?)

Wow man, this could be the silver bullet to fill the WASP Fusion gap. I personaly hate that citrus3000s ODE removes optical drive functionality. Do you think it could be made to boot using sd2sp2 into Swiss using an auto boot function?

It is made to boot from an SD card (SD Gecko at least), so if it can't already support SD2SP2, it will probably in a near future.

In fact, I think I have read that it can, but since I can't find where I read that from, I can't take it for sure.

Anyone know how to get a hold of mega at badass consoles? I placed an order a couple of weeks ago for the hyperboot but didn't get any reply to my emails yet.

Free bump! Seems like an excellent option if updated to work with sd2sp2.

I had a email from him the other day. Firmware 1.1 supports SD2SP2. There's also a version 2 of the chip that has some extra storage space for dol storage. I haven't played with it or know much about it though.

Thats awesome! Cant wait until its available! I have a few soldering projects I hope to accomplish soon. My k7000 chassis needs caps and flyback transformer. I need to inspect an rca port on a trinitron I have as well.

What was the quantity like last batch? I'm u sure how to contact the guy @ badassconsoles to ask and his twitter seems dormant, there doesn't seem to be any good IPL replacements out there, I got into the game late.

Yes, you will be able to build one yourself via a PCB manufacturer and then program it yourself with the right hardware.

Not sure you can make cheaper by building your own individually, seems it is about $20 from the guy.
That is insanely cheap, if this is able to really run SWISS or any SD card loader from boot.

The site isn't active yet, so I'm curious to know about the use of the SPI pads, if they are here for FPGA programming, SD card reader, or both?

Also, it seems it needs connections to the SP1, hope this won't prevent the use of a BBA simultaneously. (Weird that the connection scheme is different on the DOL-001 and DOL-101)

I know this is getting slightly off topic, but the SPI pads are there as a development aid and emergency recovery for the onboard flash. Since the FPGA sits on the EXI bus, it will be possible to reprogram the flash via software, and the flash is large enough to have a primary and backup boot option to make bricking much harder.

I also have a BBA, so I can double check, but the pins picked up from SP1 shouldn't interfere at all. If you're wondering, those are the EXI CLK, EXI DO (MOSI), 3.3V, and ground pins. It's much easier to solder to those than on the pins of U10. On the DOL-001, U10 is underneath a heatsink, so the fewer wires there, the better. DOL-101 puts U10 on the other side of the board all by itself, and I'm not a fan of mods needing wire connections on two sides unless absolutely necessary.

I'm a big proponent of open source, so people are totally free to make their own, hack it, improve the software, whatever. All the software/HDL will be GPL with the hardware/docs under a CC-BY-SA license that way any derivatives will also be open. I've always been saddened by how closed-source console hardware mods are compared to my home in retrocomputing, and my thinking is if I can get the ball rolling, we can collectively have nice things.
