Can I use an USB-IDE adapter on the IDE-EXI one ?

Post by unknown56 » Sun May 22, 2011 4:50 pm

Hi, I just wonder if it is possible to put an USB-IDE adapter on the IDE-EXI one so that we could use our external HDD with Swiss ?

I'm talking about an adapter like this one : Image

Thanks !

(also, I'd like to know why the USB Gecko can't work with Swiss and an eternal HDD plz, thanks)

No. This adapter is the other way round. You can connect an IDE HDD to your computer with this thing.

You need USB female to IDE male.
The closet thing I can find to it is this
http://www.delock.com/produkte/suche/De ... 61593.html maybe you could combine it further with a USB to SSD adapter.

It's just not possible. You'd need a chip/adapter which would act between the USB interface and the IDE-Exi. As you see the cable you've mentioned has USB A connector to plug in to a computer. The black thing on the other side of the adapter cable is the so called IDE connector. You plug an ide hdd in there.
But you can't connect your usb hdd with this cable in any way!

Disassemble you USB drive and use a sata to IDE adapter if needed to connect it to the IDE-EXI. then you can easily connect you USB drive but know unless you can find a device designed to do exactly what you are asking thats the only way I know of to connect the drive.

It's probably easier to convert usb to sd in combination with an sd gecko, I can't remeber if the sdgecko accepts a Micro SD without a adaptor though.

The PDA would be the SDGecko.

Wow, that Mobidapter thing sounds cool... Has someone ever tried this with an SD-Gecko ?

Nope. It may or may not work.

Since Swiss uses direct-reads without even looking at the file system I'm wondering if the Mobidapter will send those commands through in a correct way..
When it does send the reads through correctly, I'm also wondering if it'll work with an external HDD, since there are some small protocol changes with external HDD's when connecting one if I'm right.

If it all works, then I'm also very curious what the read-speeds will be. Interesting stuff, but a Wiikey-drive-replacement solution will give you about the same costs, with much better compatibility. :)

Maybe a big bump here... but I was actually thinking the same...

Hoping this

will give me both USB & IDE access on an external HDD.

I got the first already from a member on here, the second I can borrow from work, my colleague is gonna bring the third piece hopefully tomorrow.
Just curious if it's gonna work...

you mean like...2 harddrives connected at the same time?
please search before you ask - a lot has been discussed already!

I meant like having it in the external casing all of the time.
Connect to PC via USB for files management, connect to IDE via adapters for play of games. Could always cut off a USB A-plug and solder a B-type on...

Such an IDE-device works both ways normally, I've used two different models a lot of times at work for recovering dead PC drives and locked Xbox drives via DOS. Still, considering the lot of hardware plugs, I'm curious to say the least.
Sometimes it depends on the device, sometimes on the HDD compatibility...

I don't have a IDE to USB to try this, but I've seen this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBxugtEuZfk
Looks like it should work fine as long as the HDD is getting power and the GC end is not on. I assume the extra wiring on the adapter is a gender changer.

yeah I have already thought about such a solution. Will test it tomorrow. I think if it works I will soldere a relais inside my gamecube which disconnects the ide/exi from power when the usb cable is pluged in and reconnects it when it gets unpluged.
