console reset when accessing emulator menu

I was playing SNES9X on my Cube, through an SD card with a burned copy of SD Media Launcher and Wiikey SD adapter, and hit the c-stick left to access the menu. Next thing I know, the Gamecube console itself resets to the purple cube start-up animation.
My next use of the emulator went without problem, c-stick menu access worked fine. But I want o know what happened and why in case there's a problem. I'm not aware of a soft reset controller option for the Gamecube and hitting the stick to access the emulator's menu should not have done this.
