What exactly does a SDGecko memory card adapter do?

First of all, I'm a noob, so don't tell me that.

I just bought a SD card adapter for gamecube from DX.com (http://dx.com/p/wiikey-sd-card-adapter-for-wii-3993), at the time, I thought you just plugged this into the memory card slot with a SD card in it, and, providing you have the necessary files on the SD, you will be able to run backup discs.
The more I read about it, the more I think it could be more advanced than this. Could somebody tell me what I need to use this on a non-modded gamecube (even if I need to mod it), where I can buy/download what I need, and basically (I'm a noob, remember?), a step by step guide telling me what to do with it.

Thanks :D

To run homebrew on an unmodded cube, you need to buy SD Media Launcher. You'll always use the disc to boot the software in your SD.

Of you can install a modchip:
XenoGC is very cheap and easy to install, but only unlocks the drive. You can run anything from your burned discs but you'll always need a functional drive.
Qoob Pro unlocks the drive and also allows you to upload small aplications to its internal 2MB memory via USB. You'd be able to use the cube even if the drive is reading nothing. It's a bit more complicated to install though.
There's also Qoob SX, a basic version of the Qoob chip without the USB feature and much less internal memory. Apparently people found ways to flash other software into it, but I never knew how to do that.

There are also the customized solutions created by the members of this fórum, which use drive replacements originally designed for the Wii but those are rather advanced and kinda experimental for now.

The XenoGC option sounds more up my street, as I already own mini discs I could burn backup game cubes to. Can somebody tell me a reliable website where I can buy one of these modchips in the uk, and roughly how much it would cost?
