I was wondering if such app existed, to backup savegames from memorycard to SD card (not using a Wii, obviously).

yes there is. I don't currently have access to the disks where I store my gc app collection, but fortunatelly I do have access to the SD card where I have them. I haven't looked much into the software section of the site yet, and maybe they are there already, but just in case:

these are GCMM and SoftDev's tool. SoftDev's has some hidden function to dump whole memcard images too, in addition to individual saves. experiment with buttons, it shouldn't be too hard to find.
Next SD-BOOT (whatever the new name will be) will also feature memcard management.

This is exactly what I've been doing for a friend

The app you're looking for is called MCBackup. If you search for it on google you'll get lots of results (even a youtube video). It is a .dol file which allows you to backup gamesaves from a memory card to a SD card OR restore gamesaves from a SD card to a memory card. This is REALLY helpful because my friend bought SSBM and didn't want to have to beat the entire game to play the special characters. So I went to GameFaqs.com, downloaded a gamesave with everything unlocked and restored it to his memory card

As easy as pie.
Here's a mirror link to MCBackup:
