New cooling solution for Gamecube portablizing

Post by Redmagnusx » Sun Aug 17, 2014 10:24 pm

Hey guys, I just wanted to share an interesting find with you all. When looking through my parts bin for things that could be of use, I stumbled upon an old broken original Xbox 360 power brick. Naturally, I started taking it apart to see if I could use anything from it. It turns out, I found the heat sink from the power brick to be perfect for cooling our portables when paired with a slim fan.

As you can see, the heat sink is tiny at 91mm x 50mm x 4mm and it covers the main board chips just right. Now I know that the IBM heat sinks are the go to for cooling our portables, but I feel that this heat sink in conjunction with a slim fan can give us a lot more flexibility when it comes to the design of our portables. They're also a lot more readily available. Let me know what you think.

Edit:

I may have found some good small fans to add to this.

At 30mm x 30mm x3mm these fans are TINY. The decibel levels are fairly reasonable for a fan this size and the air flow is not bad either. I imagine two of these should be enough to keep things cool. The model number is UB5U3-700.

how do you plan on securing it to the mainboard, not saying this isn't a good find, just curious how people do that

I use a two part thermal adhesive called Arctic Silver 7g. It does a great job holding the heat sink in place and it also does the job of thermal paste.

Here's a link.

Doesn't work for me either. Maybe you should not link the search, but some of the search results directly.

That's the weird thing, I did not link the search, the link is for the direct page of the fan. The model of the fan is UB5U3-700. I'll post the picture for you guys instead.

Thank you. I have no idea why the first one was busted.
