Twilight Princess ISO texture editing help.

Post by ShockinglySane » Fri Sep 25, 2015 6:55 am

Hi, I had asked this question on GBATemp a while ago but the GC section there is a little dead so it went practically unnoticed...

Anyway I was wondering if anyone could help me decompress and edit the textures for a TP gamecube ISO. I am not looking to use an HD texture pack, as I know that playing without dolphin the resolution can not be changed. I just want a way to change the textures and use Nintendont on the Wii to play the modified ISO. I have done some texture hacking and model hacking of several other games, and have used wit to rebuild iso's before, so I really only need help unpacking and repacking the archives. If anyone could help I'd greatly appreciate it!

There are tools out there that are common across Wind Waker and Twilight Princess that can unpack texture archives and such, have another search, if not, someone here may be able to point you to the right direction.

I remember unpacking entire levels with some of these tools found here:

(Someone ought to take a backup of his stuff, it's really cool!)

Hey thank you for sending me in the right direction! I should be able to figure it out with the stuff you linked me to here. And as long as I am at it I will look into Windwaker tools since you say some can be used on similar file types between games. Here's hoping I can do what I aim to here.

Edit: This will probably never be seen, but I have managed to get the BMD out of Twilight Princess, (using a Howling Stone as a test object) but there doesn't seem to be any way to import new textures. SZSExplorer deems both the uncompressed and compressed arc unreadable, and while the BMD is usable and displays properly with BMDViewer2, it can only export, not import textures. Going to try doing some more research on the hex side of things after this weekend and try just manually replacing, using the info on the site you linked me to.

I know double posting is frowned upon here, but this thread isn't getting much attention. Anyway, it seems that smaller models work just fine for texture replacing, such as link himself or the howling stones. I have gotten new textures working on the wii/gc for those types of models through a long process, one of the steps of which is converting the bmd's I pull out of the files to bdl's in order to use pytex to replace textures. However when trying to convert the actual map files (in this case Ordon Village), the bmd2bdl spits out an empty file and a few errors. I have a feeling either there are too many textures/materials but if anyone with more knowledge about this could help me take a look I would be super grateful.

Edit: Did some more experimenting, and it seems that something is different about texture offsets in the map files vs the object files. Items and actors seem to convert and accept new textures just fine, but replacing a texture in a map file seems to rearrange the offsets a bit, as the textures get "misplace" i.e. a wooden bridge ends up with grass textures and the roof ends up being stretched and shares some textures with planks.

Edit2: Seems materials affect it too, as replacing the first texture in the list ends up breaking the model entirely.

It's only been a day, sit back, maybe bump it in a week.

Sorry, was more just "documenting" and hoping a show of SOMETHING being accomplished would maybe spark someone to help, as from what I can find online no one has really attempted this (with TP at least) without just using dolphins texture replacement. I have a couple other threads floating around on some other sites so if I get any info there I will bring it back here.
