If you can boot homebrew, that should provide enough as a base to be able to play backups of your legally owned games. Make sure you back them up properly first.
Mediums to play backups from
Backups can be played from a large variety of mediums. These are listed below in order of best to worst performance and stability based on my personal opinion.
Medium | Performance | Stability | Audio Streaming | Requires hardware beyond softmod? | Which homebrew enables this? |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
DVD-R | Just like the real thing | Depends on laser and media quality but generally good | Yes | No | Swiss, GCoS, GCOM, XenoGC |
SD/HC/XC Card via Wiikey Fusion or WODE | Perfect | Perfect, super fast load times | No | Wiikey Fusion or WODE | Swiss |
USB Hard Disk Drive via WODE | Perfect | Perfect, super fast load times | No | WODE | Swiss |
SD/HC/XC Card via SDGecko | Stutters on high load areas | Generally very stable on games that are supported | No | SDGecko (make your own too) | Swiss |
Ethernet | Stutters on high load areas | Generally stable, can freeze randomly on poor LAN card | No | Broadband Adapter, NetGear FA311A recommendedby loaders | S3-loader, Animal Crossing Loader |
USBGecko | Very slow and stutters | Generally pretty stable if a game doesn't mind very slow loading times | No | USBGecko | Swiss |
