Optimised 50hz-only PAL games?

Post by andykara2003 » Sun May 23, 2021 9:50 am

PAL Metroid prime is speed-optimised when playing in 50hz mode. The increased pixel density makes this a preferable way to play for me. The game runs at 60fps in 60Hz mode and therefore the 10fps drop to 50fps in 50Hz is small enough to not be an issue for me and not jarring like a 30fps to 25fps jump.

Does anyone know of other GC games that have been speed-optimised in PAL50? And does the internal resolution of the games or aspects of the PAL hardware limit the displayed resolution so in fact true 576i or 576p (Swiss) is actually not actually achievable anyway?

There has been many questions about the internal resolution, the "upscale" (black borders) seems to be essentially masked by the sets overscan, others may explain further.

But as a PAL player, I have an important advice to you: Only use 50Hz on CRT or signal-synchronized display, for modern LCD displays, or even forecoming Laser ones, just forget about it and go for 60Hz mode games, as they will only output at 60Hz anyways, and stutter along with 50Hz input.

I don't have the latest FW on my GC plug, but I wish SWISS will be able to support 720i or even 1080i via HDMI with most of the games soon.

I would plotz if that ever happens!

Is the GCVideo hardware powerful enough to do video upscaling? Deinterlacing 480i to 480p is one thing, but upscaling is a whole other kettle of fish.

No need for the GCVideo to be that powerful as long as the GC itself is.

If you don't double the pixels in the lines, 960i (1152i) doesn't need more power than 480p (576p).

The biggest problem is to get the GC to add dumb lines (960 to 1080) or crop (1152 to 1080) as the GCVideo may not manage to buffer enough data to keep the data flow sync.

I noticed something with THPS3 and THPS4, the PAL version is designed for 50hz and actually runs slower.
When I try to force 60hz on PAL game, the speed of skater is way too fast...
But then I notice still the 60hz of USA version is slightly faster game speed than the 50hz PAL.
But I got used to the game speed of PAL one so I just play at 50hz pal...
