Swiss file formats

Post by keilmillerjr » Thu Feb 20, 2020 3:15 pm

Swiss can load dol and iso. Can it read these formats 7z compressed? If so, how will it effect performance? Is there a way to reduce library size?

you can use NKIT to shrink the images

=> https://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/NKit
please search before you ask - a lot has been discussed already!
(or use google with "site:gc-forever.com *term*")

Thank you for that. I am using mac 10.13.6.

Installed mono stable 6.8.0.105 via brew <brew install mono>.
<mono NKitProcessingApp.exe> yields <WARNING: The Carbon driver has not been ported to 64bits, and very few parts of Windows.Forms will work properly, or at all> and does not launch.
<mono --arch=32 /Applications/NKit_v1.4/NKitProcessingApp.exe> yields <Error: --arch=32 Failed to switch to 'mono32'.>

Installed wine 5.0 <brew cask install wine-stable>.
<wine NKitProcessingApp.exe> works, but can not drag and drop a file to add. Opening another process <wine explorer> does not allow drag and drop between processes.

<mono RecoverToNKit.exe <path>> seems to work. Empty dat files included with NKit was a little decieving.

Simpsons, The - Hit & Run (USA).7z 1.17GB
Extracted to 1.46
NKit processed gcz 738.3MB [MiB: 704.1]
NKit processed iso 909.3MB [MiB:867.2]

Huge space savings. Thank you.

Does anyone knows if using shrinked ISO or compressed GCZ would reduce slowdowns or just add more? (MKDD for example)

Nice to see that some people manage to run Wine on his Mac, since I need hardware-specific drivers, I was never able to do this way and had to go the three other ways (VirtualBox/Bootcamp/remote desktop on headless machine).

Shrunk GCM has no real effect on performance when not using an optical medium. GCZ wouldn't help the problem cases of high bandwidth + high CPU usage FMVs, as they're incompressible.

I can run mono RecoveryToNKit.exe from my boot disk, and input files from external disk. However, I can not change key Path to external disk. I also can not pass parameters to process when running off external disk. This is making the process painful as I do not have a large enough space on my boot disk to process all my iso's in one shot.

The Luigi mansion works well at ISO with its 186mb. :D

ISO format
Game NTSC
186 megs ...
in fact, all the side effects of the Swiss in games are repeated with the ripped ISOs
