I have a GC modded with the regular Viper and running GCoS v1.4. I'm trying to figure out how to get "Boot from SD" to work. I think I need to install SD Load as a plugin but I don't have any of the original hardware, much less a PC with a Parallel port.
Is there any way to get this working?

You will likely need to have a 2GB or less SD card and then set it up for SDLoad, there's a recent thread about it. To be honest I'd just put something else on the Viper rather than bother with this.

Yeah this is very old, we have better tools nowadays. I'd recommend installing iplboot on your Viper: https://github.com/redolution/iplboot It works by loading ipl.dol file from an SD card. Put Swiss as ipl.dol and enjoy super fast booting times
