Prototype Wavebird receiver clone

Post by webhdx » Thu Nov 25, 2021 1:14 pm

A few years ago a guy named Sam did an awesome work of reverse engineering and documenting Wavebird wireless protocol: https://github.com/CFSworks/wavebird-reversing I hoped someone would take this knowledge and make an aftermarket receiver since it seemed not that complicated to do. Sadly nothing like this ever happened. Seeing so many people asking for an aftermarket receiver it seemed like a great business opportunity for companies. Having a few loose Wavebirds myself I decided to give it a try, despite lacking knowledge in RF communication field. I spent a few months trying out different radio receivers but couldn't find any that would be able to handle very specific details of the protocol Nintendo implemented. Eventually I was able to find one SoC that could do the job. I worked on it on and off during past year and just a few days ago I managed to get it working:

This is only a prototype, it works but it's very far from being perfect or ready for release.

This is definitely great!
There appears to be more Wavebird controllers out there than receivers, so having something like this will greatly help a lot of people!
