Original Gamecube controller to wireless mod
Original Gamecube controller to wireless mod
Hey Guys, I'm new to this forum. I posted this topic a couple places earlier today (maybe you've already seen it), but I figured this is the most appropriate place. So here's my ghetto controller mod:
“Why not just get a Wavebird?” …because.
Alright so simple idea; use the pcb from one of these Rocketfish controllers and replace all parts with original GC stuff. DOL-003-BIRD? haha
The knockoff board matches the original nearly spot on so it makes for a nice fit inside the case (with a little trimming here and there). The hardest part was probably desoldering all of the Rocketfish parts cleanly. Big globs of rock-hard solder as opposed to the GC board that was a total breeze. I debated a few different battery solutions and ended up going with a similar setup as the Rocketfish, 2 X AAA inside the handles. It turned out great, feels just like an original controller minus the wire (and minus rumble ). I’m working on a second one now then plan on internalizing the receivers in my wiikey fusion cube.
I considered just using a tact switch for the Start button, but decided to rig some copper pads to keep the mashy feel.
The only modification visible on the outside is the power switch and an eighth inch jack for charging the batteries.

Very cool how it all fits. Looks amazing.
Good job, and thanks for sharing!

Re: Original Gamecube controller to wireless mod
That's pretty awesome man. I had a similar idea for making up some wireless GC controllers. Since the GC only requires one dataline to communicate with the cube it would be easy to incorporate some cheapo 2.4ghz transmitters and receivers. Nice work!
Re: Original Gamecube controller to wireless mod
You know, I first tried to find if the transmitter alone could be connected directly to the GC board.. couldn't make it work so this was my alternative.Ashen wrote:Since the GC only requires one dataline to communicate with the cube it would be easy to incorporate some cheapo 2.4ghz transmitters and receivers.
I referred to your "Cutting up an official GC controller" guide to see how the IC's matched up - the two are close, but not a full cigar (my particular generic anyway). Are you saying this method should be able to work somehow?
thanks guys

is that a LEGO brick in your charger??

Two actually. 1X4 brick (1/8" jack) 1X1 brick. Invaluable little basterdz.liquitt wrote:is that a LEGO brick in your charger??

HM,..
But Y no rumble?
But Y no rumble?
Re: Original Gamecube controller to wireless mod
Those wireless controllers mostly have no rumble function (because of the higher energy consumption)
Re: Original Gamecube controller to wireless mod
Yeah, just like the ol' Wavebird. Oddly enough though, it appears they laid the groundwork for rumble on the Rocketfish board, just lacking a few parts.andzlay wrote:Those wireless controllers mostly have no rumble function (because of the higher energy consumption)
(These pics are from the first pcb I attempted, and ultimately destroyed)
