Force 480p?

Post by Burbruee » Sat Aug 28, 2010 10:29 pm

Hello.
I like to record and archive games I play, sometimes I broadcast them live and such. Plus I like to use my computer screen for everything so I don't need to have a TV.
Anyway, no affordable capture devices really exists that take in RGB-SCART, and as I live in Europe the best cable I could get before for my gamecube was sadly composite.. (no s-video support for eur-cubes)
So I decided a few months ago to upgrade my equipment, I bought a Hauppauge HD PVR which can take component input up to 1080i, and a component cable for the gamecube.

I just received my cable today, and decided to try it out right away.

The difference between composite and component is truly amazing. Even for games with no progressive scan support the quality is still very good. (compared to composite)
I have ViperGC+Cobra on my gamecube, I've heard the Qoob can force 480p mode for games which doesn't support it. Unfortunately cobra has no such feature.

I then looked at GCOS 1.X and SD-Boot respectively, as they both have the ability to force a game into a certain mode. The RC4 of sd-boot I have can also boot games from disc which is good.

GCOS didn't do very well. I tried a game with no support (Resident Evil NTSC) and it booted, but it booted into PAL50 mode, another game (Wind Waker PAL) just gave a green screen on all modes except it's own. (PAL50)
SD-Boot didn't appear to give me a signal when I selected 480p NTSC, or rather I noticed the Nintendo logo covering half of the screen at the top and looking very stretched for about a second. Then the signal was lost.

So, to my question. Is there any current way to force games into 480p mode with homebrew software other than the ones listed? Will "SD-Boot 1.0" have improved compatibility when forcing 480p?

Thanks.

I hope so, let's hope it's got undocumented modes like the ps2 that can go up to 1080i with GT4, TT and via homebrew with GSM.
I want a 576p PAL mode ;-)

I have since bought a component cable so I'm no longer blindly patching games, new SD boot will have full component support (as good as qoob did) :)

hello, I would like to know if the next sd-boot can force the frequency of a pal game that can not be forced (as well as Luigis mansion), as does the chip quob

Yes, video mode forcing is totally re-written for the next version! :)

Can you give me any hints on how you do it? My code to force video modes works on less than 50% of games, and forcing 480p seems work for even less. Right now i just switch to the video mode, and have an option to patch all video mode objects in the .dol to the used one.

Exactly how the currently released SD-Boot does it. this is doing too much work in-fact :)

The real way to do it is to make the game think it just came from the ipl running in 480p mode. (with a B button prompt to ask the user whether they want progressive display or not)
