Issue with horizontally stretched picture from GBI on 4K TV

Post by Atomicity » Tue Feb 23, 2021 9:02 am

I recently purchased my first ever 4K TV (Philips 58PUS8545/12) and I of course wanted to play some GameBoy games on it. I have a GameCube with a Pluto-IIx HDMI board installed running the latest GCVideo-DVI 3.0e. I am trying to get the a picture with the highest possible resolution and perfectly square pixels but regardless of changing the aspect ratio in the .cli file or in GCVideo, using either the gbi-gcdv-v3.dol+cli or the gbihf-gcdv-v3.dol+cli preset results in a picture that is stretched all the way to the sides of the TV, which also has large black bars at the top and bottom. It seems that the horizontal stretching occurs because the horizontal resolution of my TV, 3840 pixels, is an integer multiple (4) of the horizontal resolution of the output of GBI, 960 pixels. I am guessing that my TV sees the signal as 360p instead of 720i, causing the picture to have a vertical resolution of 1440 pixels when scaled 4 times. I am not sure if the picture that the TV is displaying actually has a vertical resolution of 1440 pixels, but it does seem to occupy around 2/3 of the vertical resolution of my TV (2160 pixels) so that would check out.

I have tried adjusting the settings on my TV to accommodate for this, but it does not seem to have the required options to change the aspect ratio as even when the picture format is set to 'Original', the image is stretched out all the way to the sides of the TV. Is there anything else that I could still try to get a picture that is not horizontally stretched?

I'm afraid you'll need to use a HDMI to YPbPr converter (or a SCART RGB cable since you seem to be PAL?) and an OSSC to get better than 480p.

Thanks for your reply, that is a bummer though... Will it ever be possible for GBI to be output in 720p from a Pluto-IIx HDMI board, or in another progressive resolution that would scale an integer number of times to 4K TVs for that matter?

There was a sort of 720p, but it was limited to 480x720p (and that's stretching the active period past the standard, so it was really 464x720p visible in analog), so it was replaced with a more practical 540p aimed at HD CRTs.

I guess you could try 720x540p? You have to disable enhanced DVI mode though, so you won't have sound.
Another option is 480x360p, but I think it has the same limitation.

I have tried 540p, which unfortunately results in part of the bottom of the picture being cut off and being displayed above the rest of the picture.

How do I enable 360p? Neither GBI nor GBIHF shows it in its options.

It's a limitation of Swiss. The friendly labels for the scan modes can't be changed with tandem with the video format.

For 480x360p60 (and not 960x360p60) you need:
  • Video Format: HD60
  • Video Mode: 240p60
  • Video Oversampling/Pixel Doubling: No

I just tried it and it just makes my TV display a frozen, garbled red-and-blue version of the last displayed screen in Swiss. Turning the TV off and on again does not help either. Anything I can do about this?

Have you turned off enhanced DVI mode in the GCVideo menu?

I edited my last post as I did not. I just did and it has a similar result, except that there is no sound this time.

Then you're out of options beside what I initially suggested.
