N64 Portable questions

Post by emu_kidid » Wed Jan 29, 2014 9:40 pm

Hi all,

I need to finish my portable N64 as it has gathered some months/years of dust, but the thing that I'm stumped on is the power requirements. I'd been powering it during testing using a GameCube power supply + GC regulator but I take it that this is probably a bad idea as the N64 might pull a heavier load on the 3.3V rail from what I've heard.

1. Does anyone have any recommendations/schematic for a good replacement regulator and/or battery pack to use? The screen I'm using is one that Ashen recommended a while back for use in cars as a reversing aid, and I haven't decided on speakers yet (see point 2). The N64 will have a expansion pak inserted and a rumble/mempak optional. It will only ever run a 64drive. Hope these help for power requirements.

2. I suppose I'd need some easy to find, well known speakers before point 1. can be determined, does anyone have any recommendations?

I've probably asked some of these questions before to various members via PM (sorry but I had to clear most of my full inbox) but if they're in a thread I probably won't lose them this time around! :D

These are cheap batteries that I use they have protection circuit board inside they are easy to open. As you can see they are 7,5 V 2500mah so of you wire them in parallel they will give you 5000mah. For the regultor you need a ti regulator to give you 3,3V.here if you scroll down a bit you will see a simple diagram of what I'm talking about.

1. For a regulator, use the PTH08080, gives you 3.3v(I will make a diagram tomorrow for that)
100uF Cap and either a single 1.8k resistor or two 1k resistors.
For batteries
7.4v 6,400mah pack: http://www.batteryspace.com/highpowerpo ... rccar.aspx
7.4v 5,300mah pack: http://www.batteryspace.com/Powerizer-P ... -rate.aspx

or you can do individual cells(2 needed)
Hailrazer used these for a while: http://www.batteryspace.com/polymerli-i ... isted.aspx

PCB: http://www.batteryspace.com/pcbfor74vli ... limit.aspx

Charger: http://www.batteryspace.com/smartcharge ... isted.aspx

2. Any battery powered iPod speakers will be good.

Thanks for the help guys, and BoFoSho for the regulator ;)

I'm looking into batteries, has anyone had any success shipping the 7.4v 6,400mah or 5,300mah packs overseas? they seem to not meet regulations yet so I'm pretty sure they'd get held up in customs or not even make it outside of the USA.

I'll try the hailrazer pack if the above fails since it meets regulations/etc.
