Upgraded my Amiga 600 HD

Post by emu_kidid » Tue Jul 08, 2014 11:41 pm

Finally got around to upgrading my Amiga 600 HD which had a dead/corrupted 40MB HDD in it.

I've added 8MB (fast) RAM, 4GB CF card to replace the HDD and upgraded the Kickstart to v3.1, here's two pictures. I really like the way the RAM addon clips on top of the 68000 and has screws in the same spots where the HDD sat to hold it down in position so it wouldn't move even if I dropped the thing hopefully.

Nice!!! I'm still on my old 500 but it plays most of the games I want. I'm sure I'll pick up a 1200 one of these years.

You can upgrade your 500 to basically be a 1200 almost and then some.

Excellent setup! that's easily a WHDLOAD A600 now :)
Piggy-bagging is very common in amiga upgrades, you can also get cheap 020 or fpga accelerators these days for the A600 to give it new life, or even flash a cheap gotek floppy emulation drive with a special amiga firmware and load your adfs like they were real disks !

Thanks! I've kept the original floppy drive if I ever wanted to load up a real disk for something :)

yeah, the floppy is useful :)
btw you should REALLY consider re-capping the A600 , those smd caps are a ticking timebomb after all these years. they usually go bad and leak...

Well you should recap ASAP. I bet when you removed the smd caps near the audio and power area you'll find they started leaking.
Cosmos sells some quality cap kits, they might be somewhat expensive with shipping but they are quality caps and you get a PDF with the cap locations LOL

I just got me an A600 capkit as well, I have a little project in mind :D

Finally replaced the caps on this, I must admit it was almost too late, some caps had started to leak and the liquid was pooling on the top side of the plastic capacitor bases!

Does anyone know if PCMCIA to SD adapters are compatible with the compactflash driver or is it only CF that works? I'm looking at buying one of these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/162293326479 but unsure if it'll be compatible.
