i was wondering........ if i wanted to hack a n64 rom would it be very complicated? and what programs would i need to do this? and how long would this take? because i have some cool n64 game hack ideas!

for example.........

what about a version of paper mario but with sonic? ( sonic instead of mario ) I would call it paper sonic and swap princess peach with amy rose, swap luigi with tails, swap bowser with eggman, swap kammy koopa with chaos ( chaos is a blue water monster) and many other changes.

any answers?

Besides just replacing the characters is kind of lame.

I think you'd be better off to just make a fan game for PC or another platform because it's considerably easier to develop for than the N64. And you can make it how you want from scratch.

im not just gonna replace characters and i want this on n64 so i can play it on my wii with wii64.

There is some game create homebrew stuff... I don't remember the name but you can get some stuff with the homebrew browser.

True rom hacking is difficult to do. As others mentioned, check the docs on romhacking.net

Keep in mind that when you modify a rom, you will have references to that data. Unless you make everything the same exact size as the changed data, you'll have to fix up all references to that data. Finding these references are not trivial.

It's probably best to start with developing a simple flash game. To undertake rom hacking, you need to have a good understanding of assembly, and computer architecture. It's difficult for a software/computer engineer with 20+ years of experience like me.

what other ways can i make this game besides pc or n64 rom? and if i did make this game i would need some help. oh and someone did make a paper sonic......... but its stupid and generic....... lol
