Any DVD writer will do the job. If you'd like your backups to last longer then that's when you'll want a good DVD writer and quality media. Get a Pioneer if you can. I have several Pioneer writers including a slimline one (DVR-K06, might not be sold anymore) that I have used in a USB case and they all produce backups that are still readable many years later. Use Verbatim media if you want longevity and Ritek if you want to ensure compatibility. That said, every Gamecube that I've tried Ritek media on will also read Verbatim that was burned on a quality writer.
tl;dr - It does matter, get Pioneer if you can.

If you can't get a Pioneer drive where you are, some others to consider are Samsung, BenQ or LG. Those ones will also do a good job making backups. Avoid Panasonic/Matsushita like the plague.
Datawrite sounds like just a brand name to me. I've never used them, but there's a fair chance that they will work depending on the dye they were made with. Check the MID in a burning program (I use imgburn), and if it's RITEKG04 then the discs will work fine at about 165Ω. The only other MID that I'm 100% sure works for mini DVDs is TDKG02, but you have to turn your pot right down to like 75Ω. If you can't find some RITEKG04 mini DVDs then it's a matter of trial and error with your pot value until it works. Some dyes just don't work. Unfortunately there's usually no way of telling what dye you're getting until you have the pack open
