Playable Demos and Unreleased GameCube Games

Post by barsil » Fri May 30, 2025 5:39 pm

Hi

Do you think it's possible to get these games in some way? The GameCube was fascinating and had immense potential, and having these games or demos would be great for its appreciation. For example, the 2005 version of Zelda: Twilight Princess (which had a playable demo at an event—I can't remember which one), the first version of RE4, the unreleased "Dead Phoenix" games from the Capcom-Five project, etc., other consoles had some of these games or demos (examples: Dinosaur Planet and 40 Winks on N64, Castlevania on Dreamcast, etc.)

You're absolutely right that the GameCube had massive potential, and the lost/cancelled titles are a key part of that legacy. While some prototypes and demos remain lost to time or private hands, the preservation scene is active, and every year more content leaks or is discovered. Stickman Hook

Yeah, i feel like there's less of a will to try to get those lost games, projects, betas, demos etc for the GameCube than for other consoles, despite its potential and appreciation being huge and there is still some.

As far as I can tell, finding earlier versions of those games in particular feels like pretty much a black box right now, unfortunately...Granted, I've seen a handful of NR Discs and development cartridges for the GC (in general) floating around on places like EBay or dumped to sources like Archive.org or Hidden Palace, but I'm not sure what you're looking for is currently out there and playable as of yet.

Twilight Princess has a kiosk demo that's been dumped...but it's for the Wii.

The earliest piece of playable Resident Evil 4 stuff that I can find on the GC is a E3 2004 demo that's been dumped on Hidden Palace, but I'm not sure if that's the version you're looking for. x-X;

As for Dead Phoenix...yeah. From what I can tell, hide nor hair of that game has been seen since it was announced, sadly.

Hopefully these games become playable one day. It'd be super cool to get to get to experience these pieces of unfinished art...I've wanted to play the earlier versions of Pikmin for the longest time now, so my heart totally goes out to you here. ; w;

Regarding Twilight Princess, the playable demo was at E3 2005. Here's an offscreen video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvjcnMnsUf4

You can see some of the elements and areas that were removed from the final game. I also saw another offscreen video showing the forest with the cats that was in the GDC 2005 trailer and which was removed from the final game, but I couldn't find the link.

I don't know if we can pay to get them earlier, I also think they'll eventually be available one day, hoping it doesn't take too long, given our age.
