Gamecube component cable
Re: Gamecube component cable
Yeah, thats aamaziong. I'm interested too, but I wait for some Installationpictures since I wanna know if i can solder this by myselt (I soldered my Viper but that was really easy...).

Re: Gamecube component cable
about personalized boards...
since i had some empty space there on the right of the main board i could have either chopped off that space to save a few milimeters
or
use the space to add a username and/or possibly a logo to add to the uniqueness of these boards
total customizable space is approx. about 6mm x 18mm ( .25" x .70" )
as seen in the previous pic, and i hope everyone noticed, im used a gamecube font.
the limitations of this font is it only has capitalized letters...
any customization will need to be within reasonable size limits or an easy design...it cannot be too crazy with details...
as long as the font type exists or the logo is in a font format, it should be possible to add to the board...
I have included a pic below with a few additional font types and possible logo ideas...
for limitation examples, i think princess, toad, and link may be really pushing the logo complexity limits
the others should be easily possible...

Keeps getting better and better. Boards look great. Too bad about those possibly dead chips.

Haha
I'm not sure if anyone not on IRC that day would understand the meaning..
but to answer your question it really depends if you want plain text or a graphical representation

Re: Gamecube component cable
so i was troubleshooting why i did could not get VGA video....
i check my solder points, check the cable, check the connector, checked the monitor's VGA port, checked the board design, checked how many beers i had left...
everything looked good except for i need to go get more beer...
i desoldered the resistor which does the VGA/YPBPR mod and connected pin 12 back to GND to check YPBPR signal...
i had great video with YPBPR...
so i know the board works....
i shaved a bit of the soldermask to get better GND contact to the VGA cable and resoldered the resistor....
still no video...DAMN!!!
so im thinking...what the hell am i doing wrong???
so i went to get some more beer and clear my mind a bit...
then wouldnt you know it....i remembered my monitor does not display 15khz VGA signal...
oops
rushed back home...
pressed the A button and VGA video appeared...
hahaha problem solved...
press the damn button
ashen, since your the closest, ill ship you this board for evaluation...
send me your info...

Re: Gamecube component cable
btw...
found the cause of the noise i reported earlier....
it happened on this board also....i thought it was kinda odd...
i figured out it was my monitors picture in picture causing noise...
when i switch to single display only with YPBPR... no noise...VGA was clean also after i cleaned up my wiring...
i think i saw the same issues Tchey reported a while back....which reminded me to clean up the wiring...
so, final analysis...
everything looks good here...
i hope these sell fast so i can move on to the next project
hehehehehehe

Re: Gamecube component cable
DVI is already possible.....but limited to only using the analog portion of DVI
which should only be considered as an alternative connection to VGA

Re: Gamecube component cable
Actually, I was thinking of keeping it digital all the way from the Digital AV Out port to the screen. I don't know if this is technically possible or not, but I have always wondered what a digital display from a GameCube would look like, if it existed.

Re: Gamecube component cable
Got my board in the mail from Megalomaniac on Tuesday. Didn't get a chance to test till this morning. It works beautifully:

I'm getting some vertical lines on the image right now most likely due to just using IDE wire to connect everything with no shielding. I had this issue on the revolution also, and when I shielded all the wires the lines went away.
Unfortunately this little screen doesn't support 15khz VGA so I'll have to switch back and forth between inputs when I put this in a portable. I'm starting to think the dalian suppliers are full of shit, and that their screens ARE capable of 15khz VGA. There's really no other good explanation.

Phew, last photo was focussed on the object
. Looking good.
So you used a 15kHz capable LCD screen, not a bad find. Just discovered old Philips projector plays 480i
. It has problems with 576i though..

Re: Gamecube component cable
Its a little 5" widescreen. I found them on e-bay a while back for $50 but there was a limited supply. I'm pretty sure its the same size as a PSVita screen as it will fit in my rev 3 fusion case.
Bummer it doesnt do 15khz vga though. Its nice to not have to switch back and forth between display modes.

oh yea!! Looking good
Except for those vertical lines...
One thing I've noticed throughout development and testing of this project is for some reason the VGA signal is more susceptible to interference than component....drove myself nuts trying to determine why and how...
In the end, easily solved with shielding.
Did that non-15khz monitor catch you with your pants down also?Ashen wrote:Unfortunately this little screen doesn't support 15khz VGA so I'll have to switch back and forth between inputs when I put this in a portable. About the Dalian suppliers, I wonder if they are not authorized to confirm 15khz compatibility due to some kind of licensing contract or distribution agreement to protect the higher selling price of a similar monitor which is marketed as 15khz capable.

Re: Gamecube component cable
Nah, I wasn't really surprised this screen doesn't support 15khz VGA. I kind of expected it ahead of time. It actually says either "no signal" (when I had forgotten video ground) or "signal not supported" (15khz VGA). The screen does take composite input though, so I'll just have to switch between on games that support "progressive mode" and not. Luckily most of the really good NTSC titles support progressive output. So no biggie I guess. Just another button to push before I get to play I suppose.
Re: Gamecube component cable
I am absolutely astounded that someone managed to find a stash of those bloody Macronix ICs, been looking for years!
And I would kill for one of them and/or a completed board. I've been tempted to reverse engineer the thing and implement it as a CPLD or FPGA but I can't justify the $80 for an official cable off eBay. Nice work! I'll be watching this to see how it progresses and hopefully snap up a board.
Friend of mine found full sized GameCube case replacements which should make installing a board dirt easy. I know of a supplier that has quite a few remaning but I can't afford to snap up $400 worth of merchandise that might remain unsold for some time. Cest la vie.
