DVD drive activity LED using RGB LED

Post by mcca69 » Fri May 20, 2016 2:45 am

I want to use a RGB LED (4 pins - common cathode) to replace the power LED, so I could use blue for power status and green for access status. However, for that I would have to use a 74LS00, 2 Input NAND, so I can disable the power LED (blue) while the access LED (green) is on.
I'm planning to get 5V from DVD pins on the bottom of the board to power the IC and the power LED. To power the green LED (access), I will use the 3V from the DID0 pin.
The common cathode pin of the RGB LED, will be connected to the cathode pin used by the stock LED, the anode used by the stock LED will be disconnected, cause the (+) for the blue LED will come from the output of the 74LS00, and the (+) for green will come from the DID0 pin.

The schematics is below:

My question is, can I power the LED's directly from the from the 74LS00, or do I have to use a transistor?
Do I really don't have to use resistors along with the LED?
Can I use different grounds of the board with no problems?

For those how are interested, I think I've found a better solution.
Instead of using the NAND gate, it is possible to use a tri-state buffer 74LS125, to control whether the power LED should be on or not.
I'll take 5V from the DVD Drive pins, and 3,3V from the data access indicator pin.
