You can attempt to force 240p on anything that you can run through Swiss- doesn't matter if it's a game or an application as far as I know, so long as you can boot it from Swiss. For some games/programs/whatever else, they just don't happen to actually run in 240p. In the case of the GBP, it still runs, but in 480i. Some other games have weirder behavior, the most common thing I think is pre-rendered cutscenes running in half-resolution, which I've seen in the opening for Mega Man Collection and according to some other entries on the compatibility wiki.

I have a GameCube, the GB Player, GB Player Disc and SD Media Launcher with ML disk.
Yes, the patch Extrems implemented was a part of Swiss. You activate it the same way you do 480p or other video patching.

Of course, that said, the patch doesn't work with the Gameboy Player for some reason. It will take more development from one of the devs (most likely Extrems again, as I think he was the sole person who implemented video mode patching, though I could be wrong) in order to make it work. You can try other games though.
Afaict, it's about muli dol games, not video patching.

Hopefully! I mentioned that earlier in the thread and I don't think there was a consensus on whether or not the GBP disc is actually loading a separate process. It'd be awesome if that's the case, as I believe multi-DOL is being worked on now.

It's definitely doing something more then your average GC game, as the GBP software lets you change cartridges without powering the system off. That means it has to boot itself, then boot the GBA game (as opposed to launching directly into the cartridge game, like with the Super Game Boy).

Hi! I just obtained the means to use Swiss today, with my SD Media Launcher arriving in the mail. However, forcing 240p in the options on Swiss and booting my Game Boy Player disc doesn't appear to work, and seems to stay in 480. Am I doing something wrong?

Are you actually applying the settings?, And using a component cable?

I thought that it was pointed out earlier, that it does not work yet on GameBoy Player?

@emu_kidid

Is it possible to force via SWISS the GBP player to boot at a 59.73Hz screen? (thus matching 1:1 the original GBA timing)
The GC AFAIK outputs a 59.94hz signal, very close but it does produce some hickups now and then... not that big of a problem but ultra-smooth scrolling is always welcome!
(I can test such a feature if it can be done and you can bother to make a test build or something :D )

Nintendo's video timing for NTSC double-strike is 59.8261 Hz.
It's possible to produce other rates, but 59.73 Hz is difficult.

Right now the assumption is that multi-DOL disc patching is what will fix the GBP :D

As for forcing a different vertical refresh rate I've been reading speculation across tons of different forums. Didn't know it was possible to change the Gamecube's output refresh though.

Is it possible to get the Gamecube's refresh just a little closer to the GBA's? Theoretically that may instead of removing the hiccups (which are the GameCube repeating a frame to get the GBA back in sync), at least reduce the frequency of them down to possibly minutes apart instead of every few seconds. That is, if the software that handles the re-syncing was written to be adaptable.

EDIT: now that I've googled NTSC double-strike, the 59.8261Hz refresh rate should be enough closer to the GBA's refresh rate to test the theory and see if a closer refresh rate reduces the frequency of hiccups. Just need to wait for 240p to work on the GBP.

240p people, check the latest swiss nightly build.

A huge thanks again to Extreme, as it works wonderfully. Not only does 240p look wonderful (I think the centered frame may be a pixel-perfect resolution match for the GBA, by I'm not positive), but also the hiccups where frames are duplicated due to refresh rate differences happen half as frequently, every 10 seconds instead of every 5 or so. I don't know if this is because the 240p refresh rate is closer to the GBA's, or if more had to be tweaked under the hood, but it's a huge benefit to the people investigating how to fix the hiccups.

All this makes for a much more enjoyable GBA experience, so again a big thanks to Extrems for putting in the time to make it happen.

Wow, that's great news! I tested and it works fine. I'll be able to spend more time with it this week and really give it a playthrough with some GBA and GBC games!

Thanks so much for this!

is the 240p setting for the GBP saving for you people?
I set mine to "force 240p" , hit "save & exit" and it works for one time. Once I reboot the 240p setting is lost and gets reverted to Auto...

On Wasp/WKF no settings are saved anyway. Or did you use another method?

It seems that nothing can be written to the "DVD drive" or the replacements. I would like when the settings would be read from/written to Gecko in Slot B automatically. That would be great.

so is the 240 just for the Gameboy player or does it work for everything?

Awesome update!

If SWISS has the ability to modify the output resolution of the GameBoy Player might it also have the ability to modify the output framerate in the future?

Mostly everything, Swiss applies 2-line averaging in gamma light.

I added Swiss 240p captures to the Game Boy Player page, in case anyone's interested:

http://www.retrorgb.com/gameboyplayer.html#240p

I didn't have much time to spend, so I used a capture card, rather than my RGB monitor and a DSLR. Hopefully I'll have time soon to get real pics. I find when comparing 240p, a pic taken with a DSLR shows a lot more detail than a screen capture.

With this new found 240p support, could anyone recommend a FlashCart that is compatible with the GameBoy Player and supports GB/GBC/GBA with large SDHC storage?

I should point out a pitfall with the native 480p support.
The equivalent of "Soften: Yes" is in effect, force 480p for a sharp picture.
